Boundary Walls & Building Regulations

Our neighbour is currently building an extension to his property which we believed to be in contravention of the local building regulations because of its proximity to the boundary wall.  Last weekend he informed us that he had taken down the boundary wall between our properties because it was ugly. What course of action is open to us if for example he has moved the boundary onto our land.  He made it quite clear that he wanted to acquire some of our land in order to expand his garden however as we only purchased our house in April 2005 we advised that we would need to give our plans for the garden some thought and get back to him, we have since decided to retain our land.

Who owned the boundary wall? If it were theirs then I suppose that they could do what they want with it.

His extention should have a planning permit panneau on display. If there isn't one go and ask at your Mairie as to where the planning permission is for this property.

Re the boundary,  you should get a Geometre to mark the boundary. It is against the law for anyone to touch or move these official boundary markers (bornes). Geometres are not cheap but you will know what is what and more to the point exactly where your boundaries are. There may already be bornes there if you are lucky.
