1. Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread. We've been getting loads of wasps around the piscine - not aggressive (just after the water), but a nuisance. We bought a 'waspinator' (looks like a wasps nest and you hang it up - supposed to scare em off). Does it work? In a word, no. Completely useless. These provencale wasps are obviously scared of nothing. Back to waving the arms around and swearing a lot.
2. I went through the DRIRE route and, apart from the slowness, it was pain-free. The only surprise I got (although it should have been anticipated), was that they wanted to see 'proof' that I'd adjusted the headlamps. A facture from the local garage did the trick.
3.

Hello, Does anyone know where/how to get hold of non-stabilized chlorine products (other than Javel)? I don't want to raise the CYA level in the water - or at least I want it to be under my control. Many thanks for any info.
That's quite Bizzar..;; You want to raise your chlorine level, without raising your CYN stabilzer level... OK no problem. But you don't want to use Javel (sodium hypochlorite) why for heavens sake not? Its straight chlorine and its cheap as chips available in ANY brico or Farm supply. Calcium Hypochlorite is another equivalent but not good for hard water areas, also not as easy to find or as cheap. Both do the job ..; so what's the problem again???? Andrew
I've probably not expressed myself properly. I'd love to use Javel, but unfortunately I'm having some trouble locating 'Extrait de Javel' (9.6% - 30degrees) and so want something else available in periods of 'Javel drought'. I found a small quantity in Mr Brico - but much of it was out of date. I've also tried Castorama, Bricorama and Bricomarche without any joy. I hadn't thought of farm suppliers, but I don't think there are many of those near here (Var) - most growing stuff around here is olives or vines (hic), although we had an interesting visit a while ago from flocks of sheep on their annual 'transhumance'. So - the hunt continues, but in the meanwhile, its a case of Ca(ClO)2 (which I bought from a shop in St Raphael, and yes, it's expensive - and the bloke gave me dire warnings about its life-threatening properties if not used correctly) Cheers
4. I'm having difficulty in finding a stockist (although I admit I haven't tried many places!). I found a couple of 5L bottles in Mr Brico - none in Casto or Bricomarche. Cheers
5. Thanks - that's quite close to us - I'll call in.

7. Any idea where to get this? I'm taken by the idea of using Javel as the disinfectant and had a quick look in the (admittedly small) supermarket yesterday, but most of the stuff in there was attractively perfumed with lemon etc. and the only 'unadulterated' variety was 2.6% On my (crude) reckoning, this would mean a 2L bottle a day - not particularly expensive, but all those empty Javel bottles!
8. I might actually remove them - if nothing else, they bang open-shut in a rather irritating manner when you're swimming. If I could figure a way of removing them in a non-destructive fashion I'd do it straightaway!
9. Thanks for the reply - I've now 'jammed' the sticky one 95% open, using my best Heath Robinson techniques. The pool is concrete/tiled, so should be OK. Anyway, I don't think I can cool it down - flipin' sunshine!
10. Hello, We've got a 10x5 piscine with 2 skimmers. These are fitted with "flaps" (is that the correct name?) which bang open and shut as you swim about. Now one of these flaps has developed a habit of not opening properly when the pump comes on and I'm a bit worried that one of these days it will stick fully shut and we'll start circulating air and not water. I've checked the thing and it seems free enough, but nonetheless this sticking occurs pretty regularly. Are they absolutely necessary? If not, would it be OK to forceably remove it (I can't see any 'easy' way of taking it off), or failing that, jam it open? Any ideas appreciated. (current water temp 31 btw  :)
11. Hello, We planted a white Jasmine plant (4 -5 weeks ago) in a trough, with the intention of it growing up a trellis. It's climbing really well, with good strong-looking foliage. It's also producing quite a few buds, but these turn brown and shrivel up before opening. The plant gets watered from time to time (soil is damp, but not soggy) and we've fed it a couple of times. It gets the sun from about 11:00 onwards. Any ideas?
12. If the £ continues its current rate of descent I might well be living on tuppence a week!
13. OK, I'm confused again (sorry) about the section on mobiliers - tables A (abbatement 40%) and B (Autres revenus) Does anyone know where to put ... 1. UK interest on savings taxed at source in the UK? 2. UK cash PEPs and ISAs? 3. Dividends on shares PEPs and ISAs? .. my guess would be 1 goes in A and the others in B - but heck!
14. Thanks for the link - very useful. However, I see that it says (about savings interest) .. "Add together all of the net interest and winnings for both spouses" .. that should be "gross" shirley? Or am I missing something?
15. Hello, Sorry if this has been asked before, but Newbie speaking here! I'm getting to grips with my first tax return - doing pretty well considering I have a severe allergy to bureaucracy. Firstly our circumstances - we arrived to reside permanently in France (Var) on 22nd June 2007. So I'm calculating our tax on the basis of income from that date until 31/12. The (main) thing I'm unsure about is how much interest to declare on some UK savings accounts, specifically a case where we closed accounts in Sept. 2007 and the accrued interest was paid on the closure. These accounts 'normally' got interest paid annually on 1st April, so the closing interest covered both 'non-taxable' (April to 21 June) and 'taxable' (thereafter)  periods. So - should I declare the 'taxable' proportion (i.e. roughly 2/3) of the total interest - or is the date the 'gain' was realised the significant factor, in which case I need to include the whole amount. I must say my inclination is the former - but would like to know if there's any regulation which covers the situation. I know this sounds a bit nit-picky, but I've always found it wise to be at my pedantic best with tax people. Many thanks in anticipation.
16. Hi, I'm also in the process of registering the car. One thing I find puzzling about the DRIRE application is that it asks for "le certificat de conformité original délivré dans le pays d'acquisition" to be sent with the application. I thought the point of taking the DRIRE route was to avoid the need for a certificate of conformity - or am I being dim? (a not uncommon occurence). My car (Citroen) doesn't have anything resembling a cert. of conformity attached to any of the documentation and Citroen UK want £100 for one. Any light would be appreciated. K
