  1. We've just got our stove working - not a new one, but it was in the house when we bought it - and need some basic help. It seems to get through wood very quickly, are we supposed to keep it topped up, or just reload when it's burnt almost everything up. Am I correct in thinking that by closing the air vents, the wood should burn slower?   Thanks
  2. Hi all, We've recently bought a house just outside of hesdin, and are starting to spend more and more time here- hopefully intending to move permanently sometime next year. In the meantime, and possibly a silly question, but are there any sports bars in the area that show English football live? Richard
  3. I have my laptop connected wirelessly to a Livebox with no problems. I am now trying to connect my wife's laptop as well, but it doesn't get any further than "aquiring network address". The only difference between the two is that hers has XP SP3 on and mine SP2. Any ideas?   Thanks
  4. Do you know how thay are changing the plates?
  5. Ernie, as far as the 6 month rules concerned, do they actually have any means of checking? When we book Eurotunnel we dont have to specify which car we're talking.
  6. I will still be paying UK tax. Cars will be back and forward, but difficult to say exactly for how long. Insurance wise, Toyota insurance will cover uk and abroad for( in my case) only £35 extra, and thats fully comp. - and they don't only insure Toyota's.
  7. Hi all, If we are part-time resident in France, and part-time in the Uk - approx 1/2 the week in each - can we choose to either register our cars in France or the UK, or are there specific rules in such a case?   Richard
  8. So amazing what I can do without a head!   Care to explain the "ways round this"?
  9. I have read somewhere, wish I could remember where but thats old age setting in, that if I register my car in France it is possible to still use my English number plates. Has anyone else heard this?   Richard

    Pet Insurance

Hi, Are there schemes for pet insurance in France, like Petplan etc. If so, does anyone have any expierience of them, and any tips? Thanks
  11. I have found that the only way to do this is to have two Uk email addresses, and use one for UK banl account and one for French.
  12. Thanks for that. Do you know where I can find the tv schedules, so i can see if it's worth getting?
  13. I'm taking a Sky dish and receiver over to Hesdin, and will set it up with a French bought TV. Will I get the free TNT programs on this, or do I need a separate dish to receive them?
  14. Hi, Interesting point. as I am just looking at French pay-as-you-go contracts. I went into an Orange shop, only to be told that PAYG cards only last a max of one month, which is of no use to me. I have looked for L'ecrec on the internet but can't find it - do you know anytjing else about this PAYG scheme, and where I can find it?   Thanks   Richard
  15. As a matter of interest, where can I find out which letter refers to which yesr?
  16. Hi all, I need an installer in the Hesdin area to fit up a satelitte dish - I'm bringing all the equipment over from the Uk, just need it all put together.   Anyone help?
  17. Hi, Can anyone recommend a reliable, non rip-off electrician in the Hesdin area? Hopefully one who can speak English!
  18. Another query - we must be getting nearer to completion on the house! Is there a non subscription satellite service that ,as well as all the "usual" English Tv and radio, will receive Sky Sports News and Talksport radio? ( What makes anyone think we're footy mad!)
  19. We are in the process of buying a 2nd home in France and will need a basic phone service, with a broadband connection. What's the best, and cheapest, way to do it?   Thanks all.

    Fencing

Hi all, Anyone know of a fencing supplier in the Hesdin area? I have approx 40 mtrs width garden which needs secure dog-proof fencing around 1 mte high, but with  a gate so us humans can get through. I'm thing about picket fencing, rather than the green wire stuff that everyone seems to use.   Any ideas?     Richard

    Beds etc

Are there any furniture "superstores" around the Calais or Arras areas? (That was very straight and to-the-point, wasn't it!!)   Richard
  22. Hi, Further to my previous post, the correct number for Tany at Barclays is + 33492996816
  23. Has anyone heard, or even better is using, a KAON FTA system? I've found it on http://www.tvtradesat.com/site/section1/index.htm, and it looks just the job, without having to arrange a sky account in the uk.
  24. Rescue Remedy is a calming liquid that you place in the drinking bowl- most on-line ( and probably off line too) suppliers stock it. Have you considered sticking to UK and French holidays so that you can take your dog with? We used to have a fantastic dog sitter, the wonderful Sheila, who would come and look after our dogs while we travelled the world, but last year we got a GSD puppy, who has fast become a v..e..r..y..b..i..g..d..o..g!! We now holiday in the UK, and France, and are now buying a holiday home in Northern France, so that we can have holidays and take our 3 dogs with.
