1. Is it true that the French are pushing to get striking included as an Olympic sport? Currently listening to some radio broadcasts from Easter 1984 and in the news - French air traffic controllers on strike!
2. Methinks 'The Lighter Side' needs renaming 'The Heavier Side'

It is all down to perceptions.I had an American friend who I recounted a story to of when trying to visit my UK bank was prevented doing so by men in felt hats with chequerboard ribbon round who had guns drawn - they were police foiling a bank raid. My US friend 'I have never seen a policeman with a gun drawn'. A comment on house security my US friend said 'If I wanted to lock my doors I would have to fit some locks'. Perceptions - all Americans are gun totting - reality not all Americans are not gun totting.
4.
What a pity to see this Anglo Saxon slavery creeping in here. One of the best things about French life is the respect for a Family Sunday letting shop workers have a day off instead of being at the mercy of materialism.
Norman, do you use electricity on a Sunday- thepower workers are working. Do you watch TV or listen to the radio on a Sunday = the media people are working. Do you buy a newspaper on a Sunday/Monday - the print workers are working on a Sunday. Have you ever needed medical treatment on a Sunday - the hospital workers are working on a Sunday. Ever travelled on a Sunday - the transport workers are working. Possibly have a house fire or subject to crime - the fire department and police are working on a Sunday. Why are shop workers different?
5. I notice that most of the DIY chains are open this Monday, a pubic holiday! Have they now realised that there ias money to be made from people carrying out DIY during a holiday who until now have been frustrated to find they need something but nowhere to get it. Whatever next, opening on a Sunday....no, that is taking it too far.
6.
The strange thing is you really need to look hard to find the arguments for and against. If this were a general election, you'd have televised leaders' debates, election broadcasts for the major parties and endless speculation and analyses on all of the media. I find it very frustrating that the referendum is undeniably more important than general elections and there so little discussion, relatively speaking, of course!
Well, where we are in the UK in Lincolnshire the only voting was for the Police and Crime Commissioner. We voted having tried to find out the thoughts of the 4 candidates but it was extremely sparse. However, some friends, in their early 70s did not vote for the first time in their lives because of 'no information from any of the candidates and virtually nothing in the local press'. So far the propaganda from the 'stay in brigade' are that their will be dire consequences if we come out and the 'get out brigade' are that their will be dire consequences if we stay in that people will decide they cannot make up their minds or are totally fed up with all the ranting that they will give voting a miss. And yes Mint more important than a general election in my view because you can change the party after 5 years. Vote out in this one and there will be no way back in unless a vast price is paid or perhaps vote in and the EU will think the UK will accept whatever is thrown at it. Plus how many people think it is important - think of the make up of UK society.

Trump

Think it depends on how clever Trump is, especially if he becomes President. If he puts in to practice what he has been saying to become the Republican candidate he may have some problems with certain other governments as well as certain sections of those in the US. Wasn't there a certain chap in Germany who said he would make that country great again?
8.
I see that more modern satnavs than mine constantly show the speed limit for the road you are driving on. Brilliant! Cos as ALBF says above, you only have to have a lorry obscuring the sign and you are scuppered. Angela
The problem is how up to date is the sat nav maps. I updated mine last year to the latest available. On the Essex stretch of the M25 from Dartford round to the M11 and a little way up it makes an awful squawking noise to inform me that I am exceeding the speed limit.....the limit was 40mph whilst they were widening the road which was completed 3 years ago. No problem if speed limits increase but unless road works are completed they normally only go down.
9. I do not know about the earlier comment about Brexit not happening. As the majority of my time is spent in the UK and been back in the UK since the end of February I have not seen any opinion polls so which way will it go? Scare stories from both sides with the Government using taxpayers money to issue their booklet. Could people get fed up with the way the Government is going about this and vote OUT just to spite them. Of course it will be interesting what the turn out will be which will probably be very low so very difficult to predict the outcome.
10. Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the strike in aid of?
11. Thank you very much for your very kind words and thoughts. We were very impressed with the care at Sheffield Hospital - the staff seemed to go the extra mile and were totally patient focussed. Pat it would be good to meet up again - I will PM you later.
12. Norman, so glad that everything is going OK suppose it is a shame that they cannot cure you of WB :) Pat, no we have not moved over full time. That would not be until next year when I become an OAP and think that the UK would pick up our medical bills subject to the outcome of the 23rd. However, think we will flit between the two countries. Last year Yve was diagnosed as having a brain tumour. It is called Acoustic Neuroma or to give it is proper name Vestibular Schwannoma. It grows on the nerve from the ear and also the balance nerve. Whilst benign it can cause problems from pressing on the brain as well as causing hearing and balance loss. Luckily she persisted with the GP until he sent her to a specialist who diagnosed it and then referred her to the specialist centre in Sheffield. Her tumour is small and the three courses of action were 1. wait and see, 2. gamma knife where about 200 gamma rays are fired in to the head to converge on the tumour or 3. actual surgery where the nerve from the ear is destroyed as well as the chance for facial palsy. Yve opted for the gamma knife which was carried out last September and is still suffering the after effects as well as possibly the tumour reacting. She will have an MRI this September to seewhat the situation is (there is no point in one now due to the reaction the tumour will have had). She will have an annual MRI for the next 10 years and it is only after the 5th one that they can predict whether it has been a success - the tumour can carry on growing as well as the hoped for shrinking. So I am sure she will want to carry on being watched by those who carried out the procedure.
13. Had a little look in the other day as another forum I have been using has changed for the worse and noticed that it was mentioned that a certain person no longer posted on this forum, the one that made me stop posting - fed up with him telling me that it was impossible to do something that I have done a few times. So thought lets go back. Must say I have missed WBs posts and I now know why there is bunting and so much jubilation in the Vendee. And how is Norman doing, hope the op went well and that you are feeling better. Also it seems that all the old faces are still here (apart from one).
14. Q you reallly are something. If I were down south - I am below Toulouse and can get to Spain in just over 1 hour. So how south do I need to be? The new dish replaced an 80cm dish that after the change received nothing of the UK spot beam channels. So if it makes you happy,1 AM JUST OUTSIDE OF CALAIS, WITH A 60CM DISH AND i CALLED IN AN EXPERT TO ALIGN THE DISH FOR ME. ALL THAT i HAVE WRITTEN HAS BEEN ABSOLUTE TOSH AND I AM VERY MUCH MISTAKEN THAT I USED THE PROCEDURE TWICE WHEN I RELOCATED THE DISH TO ANOTHER POSITION BECAUSE IT GAVE A BETTER LINE OF SIGHT. HAPPY NOW? PROBABLY NOT.
15. You are tiring me Q. Firstly, my dish is mounted on an extremely robust 75mm pole. The hole for the bolt is slightly larger than the bolt so permitting slight movement. As for gaining an extra 1.5dB or whatever is of really no interest. Reception of all HD channels is totally acceptable and as non HD channels are broadcast at a lower standard are therefore fully watchable. As for luck, no such thing - when the dish points in the right direction that is it. I have done it which contradicts your previous statement that it cannot be done.
16. Perhaps the OP being well and truly told means that it leaves no uncertainty of what the position is. Perhaps the point raised by Idun is the only possible recourse if it does not have planning for commercial use - however, something that is currently going on near to where I am would not give me hope of any outcome other than the current situation.
17. So tell me Q why should you not drill through and fit a nut and bolt???? As for problems, if you can receive a signal then the only problem people will have if they do not take their time. Sorry Q if it upsets you that you do not need a man with a meter.
18. Aligining a dish with a Humax box - note this is a slow and tedious job but costs nothing. The Humax box needs to be setup, i.e. tuned previously. My dish has two ‘U’ clamps that clamp to the pole and a threaded rod to adjust it vertically. The U clamps need to be tightened such that it still allows movement of the dish. If replacing a dish then you will have a good idea of the direction that the new dish needs to point. Position a TV so that you can see it whilst aliging the dish. Connect it to the LNB via the Humax box and select a channel that is not on the UK spot beam – Pick 144 is not at this moment in time. Adjust the vertical alignment so that it is higher than need be. Now very slowly turn the dish through the horizontal – it needs to be slow as when a signal is detected by the box there will be a slight lag before it shows on the TV. Now very slightly lower the vertical angle and repeat turning through the horizontal arc. Carry on adjusting the vertical angle until the channel is picked up. With the pan European beam large variations of the position of the dish can be made without loss of signal. Make some marks so that you know where the channel was detected – this will enable the dish to be re-positioned to where the signal was detected. The UK spot beam is a completely different matter to the pan European beam and allows only a very small movement to either receive or lose the signal. Now tune to a channel on the spot beam, i.e. 101 BBC1. Now repeat what you have already done but only through a very small arc and fine vertical adjustments. Cary on with this until the channel is received. Now make very small adjustments to obtain the highest signal strength and quality readings. Now tighten the ‘U’ clamps – you may need to readjust the dish if tightening causes any movement of the dish. Once completed drill a hole through the dish bracket and the pole and fit a nut and bolt – having found the correct position you do not wish to have anything move the dish.
19. Sue, the other option is a Humax recorder, record when they are transmitted and then watch when she wants.
20. Well Q, I have achieved the impossible. I have installed a dish of 1.3m and have aligned it myself using the method stated. No professionals with their meters have been involved.
21. Val I hope you have gained some good feelings that your OH has helped others who have the ability to survive. If someone is brian dead then basically, they are dead. Having someone on life support, especially for years merely prolongs the agony.
22. What an invitation your title has but I will ignore it. Where we are in 31 it can be hot but it can also be very cold - just over two weeks ago we had the heating on in the evening.
23. Have a look at: http://skyinmadrid.com/pages/news.html and you can align a dish bigger than 1m using a TV and the signal strength / quality meters of a Humax box. And yes, reception does change during the year.
24. Very true Pat - plus the problem for the tradesman / woman if something goes missing.....did they take it or has it been misplaced.
