  1. Quick twopennyworth ... we have 5 LCD tellys ranging from 22 to 46". We have bought Samsung models, none cost more than £600, because Sony's use Samsung components why pay the premium? Our 2 boys have rigorously tested LCD & LED using gamestations etc (tend to be up on latest tech). Newer models are wired for internet .... so what you ask ....
  2. Frankly if the majority of Scotland wishes to split then lets get on with it. I am tired of reading about SNPs wingeing :(
  3. My thoughts on cost: Transit of vehicle to Bordeaux, Nantes or Rotterdam $1600 Cost of changing glass, speedo, rectifying indicators and brake lights $3000 plus labour Cost of confirming weights & emissions in Paris $2500 Cost of Bonus Malus for V8 monster $4000+ Transporting vehicle to Paris etc ? I am being slightly naughty but my thoughts are that it is some US monstrosity ... if it was a VW Polo then you would sell it and buy one here :) If it is a rust free early Porsche, MGB etc then I am jealous :)
  4. Bets that total costs will exceed $12k :)
  5. HSD, Send an e-mail to their head office detailing this .... you may not get a reply but for sure no company, whether they are Brit, French or Taiwanese, want to see their portion of 4500 walk. If nobody complains to HO's then nothing will change :(
  6. If we all talk about this rumour then it may become true :)
  7. I have used the export certificate twice at Niort with no issues. Indeed, because both vehicles had been purchased tax free and exported to Italy I did not wish to muddy the waters; however, Niort was not impressed with the SOFA documentation issued in Italy but were content with the export paperwork originally provided by DVLA. Hotel d'Impot in Melle were very interested in all our documentation, especially since one vehicle was 6 months and 3 days old - there used to be a particularly awkward blonde lady in there (I did laugh at the number of times she checked the calendar - not happy when forced to concur with my assessment).
  8. Bugsy, Almost right .... Most of us pay our way :) There are some slippery folk amongst the British community as well.
  9. If you are interested at barebones computers then Zotac Zbox' may be just the ticket (available thru Amazon). Load Linux or Windoze - can even select model with no memory and HD - if you fancy sourcing your own.
  10. And in the democracy we enjoy ... we can agree to disagree :)
  11. Don't know about per tonne but we do not pay a standing charge .... over 10 years ago we paid approx £400 up front. Because our wood fires are so good ... We use gas mostly for range .... expect company to have a hissy fit soon since we fill our tank (85% or approx 850kg) every 2-3 years.
  12. I always thought you had to be a complete idiot to load a virus on Linux or, for that matter, Lion/Leopard OS. Do they fashion the malware to attack all current forms of GNU/Unix based platforms? Or is it targetted to specific incarnation? So it will also attack Apple? Or are you referring to recent Apple malware?
  13. As they say "It ain't rocket science" .... not anymore :) Tart it up with Gnome or KDE (Kubuntu)?
  14. There are still a fair number of engines that have a timing chain.
  15. NormanH's suggestion is a bloody good idea - however, sometimes being able to easily remove an OS prevents you persevering - unless you are also bloody-minded(like me). Thanks for info, I'll have another look at VPN Tunnel on my return. As discussed, if you are feeling brave (read thread and Wiki) and have a spare machine then: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/11/ubuntu-12-04-daily-builds-available/ Common feeling is not much change from 11.10 (some folks commented more stable than 11.04). As I mentioned, will play with it on return to "work". Alpha version of LTS supposedly available in December. I am not a programmer just somebody that enjoys learning new things when separated from family.
  16. Rabbie, Sorry to hear that ... 11.10 works fine for my needs (apart from configuring VPN Tunnel) loaded with 7 on laptop as dual boot. I basically became interested 'cos you can still play with the software ... and if you screw it up then it is a quick reload :) We have Apple products for home but I have XP for work, 7 for bringing stuff away. I found the "Linux for Dummies" useful .... and the forums are filled by helpful folk - no Trolls :) Vern
  17. Now Ubuntu 12.04 - flabby 750mb so download to thumbdrive for install. Will check out when I get back to my dual boot laptop ... totally unnecessary 8GB RAM (£19 per 4GB 204 pin 1333), dual-core 2.36 and 120GB SSD (use original 500GB HD as external drive for storage, mirror and torrent) ..... but shocks folks with startup (even Slowdoze 7 is circa 20 secs). Hardware has become so affordable online that you can easily give your laptop a lift for a reasonable cost. Easy to fit hardware just don't forget to earth yourself before taking computer apart (or wear earthing wristband to computer).
  18. Mr GG, Linux is supported by a community. To put Linux into context ... Apple use similar :) Latest Ubuntu is 11.10 - when you download it (or partition it) you will find that setting everything up is very easy. It will even recognise printers. Apps such as VLC (Video Player for avi, mkv etc) is accessible by search function in synaptic manager. Things get a touch harder if you want to download apps that are rarer, assuming they have a Linux version such as openvpn, because you then need to have a basic understanding of the directory system that Linux uses (also how to become a "root"). Best bet is to play with Ubuntu 11.10 on a spare laptop or desktop - unless you want to dual boot a hard drive or mount OS within windows.
  19. Personally, I would be very wary of currency traders. Last year one went belly-up allegedly leaving folks without funds. Several years ago I asked several of these companies 1,who legislates them 2, How was the integrity/safety of funds guaranteed. Nothing heard so I carried on using bank transfers when appropriate. Will use HSBC Premier Acct facility in both countries 'cos the transfer happens on same webpage ... money out of UK acct straight into Fr acct.
  20. One of our junior staff in Naples was a young american ... Boss had to explain to him that 80 kph was not possible, in a rental, without changing gear. The neapolitan style of driving made his stay with us very short
  21. Exactly ... if you keep a gear lower at 90 kph - so 5th instead of 6th .... you'll probably be doing the 2000 + rpm. 20 mins and it is sorted.
  22. Our scenic and mini say to drive above 2000 rpm for an extended period - touchwood, not required cos both have periods above that :)
  23. Jackie, So about €53 sq m? We paid
