1. I actually grew 10 of them successfully a few years ago.  They grow very close to the ground with huge leaves (like pumpkins)  but they weren't ready to eat 'til about July.  My hubbys grandmother sugested that I lay the fruit while it was growing on a brick or piece of terracotta tile.  This keeps it warm during the day and protects it from the soggy soil preventing it from rotting. Oh my God, I went all Charley Dimmock then! [:D] That's what happens when you bother with Tresco
 2. Stop it - now!  All of you.  I'm on a diet - again!! I always add a head of garlic seperated and in their skins about an hour before cooking ends with all my roasts.  Blinking fabulous.  You're breath stinks for a week but hey...!  When in France[;-)] Actually garlic breath is compulsory 'round here[:D]
 3.
Ali, you weren't that Martian were you? There are no date stickers here. Someone just brings them round and dumps them outside the door. Damned inconvenient if you ask me. Also, Gill mentioned the melon scooped out and filled with Pineau. That's also inconvenient; trying to find a way to eat the melon and leave the Rocket Fuel which is Pineau
I'll have it if you don't like it Tresco![:P] Charentaise melons are delicious with Serrano ham. Ask Sylvie on the meat counter to slice it "chiffonade" style - superb!!   See how I got us back on topic there?  I'm getting good at this forum thing[;-)]
 4.

Bet Tinkle has something to say about that!!
Do you mean TWINKLE?  Why on earth would I have something to say on this subject?  I know I'm not the brightest light-bulb on the forum (although I like to think I'm the shiniest[:)])    Please enlighten me Harley.
Sorry Twinkle, I just thought you of all people would find something funny to say about a Mod called Miss Whiplash![:D]  You have such a great sense of humour.
That's so sweet Harley, thank-you.   I'm trying very hard not to say funny things at the moment.  I'm trying to give advice in a very serious and sensible manner.  Whenever I feel my sense of humour coming along I bite my fingers.  I'm in agony at the moment - I'm actually typing this with my toes[;-)]
 5. Don't worry I won't Ian.  Who wants a hollow melon anyway?
 6.
No. I've seen old ladies do it in the supermarket.
I wonder what young ladies do? Another tip for the charentaise variety is if the stalk is just about ready to to come away
 7. Thank you all for your replies, but you seem to be talking abou the charente variety I know how to choose those.  At the moment they are not sweet enough, so I prefer the spanish varieties like these  they don't have an odour when you smell them, so I don't know if I'm buying a ripe one or not.
 8. That doesn't sound right to me?  Are you teasing me Dick?  [8-)]
 9. Wasn't sure where to post this but I've just sent a pm to Tresco and it comes up saying I have posted to a Mr David Sowry!  What's going on?[:-))]

 11. Just bought and enjoyed my first charente melon of the season to-day and it was quite tasty!  I am very au fait on how to select this particular variety - let me know if anyone's interested! However, I'm never sure how to tell if the pale green and bright yellow rugby ball shaped Spanish ones are ripe enough to eat.  Any tips?
 12. Hi Vicky! lovely to see you back, will get back to you with an answer for your tax forms.   I'm a bit freaked out that you need forms for 2042 & 2047, my  hubby normally does all that so am not sure -  but will do my best![:)]

 14. Ok, then maybe you may have to think of making a trip to Toulouse or Beziers.  I have some friends in 34 I'll ask them if they know of somewhere near you. If you don't want to pay a lot of money for wastepaper bins shops like Gifi & La Foire Fouille are great for bits 'n' pieces like that. They are all over France in the commercial zones. All the best!
