1. Oh yes, bigger is better. Yep,your right, it is the height that you will be holding the piece horizontally on the anvil, whilst having your arm in a normal position. So prevents strain. Also you are taking more advantage of gravity, the lower it is. Bit of messing around though with the coal isn't it. And it's not nice smoke. So i prefer it ready made! What type and weight is 'lightning'??!!
2. Hi Pierre Anvil is 125kg I prefer coke, i'll pm you some details of suppliers. Were you using proper charcoal (as opposed to bbq stuff??)
3.
Whilst bees wax and linseed oil are indeed recommended as a preservative, one of the de facto restoration books (below) also mentions other things! viz: "Finally a combination of beeswax and boiled linseed oil was rubbed into the surface." The Handbook also mentions a number of other alternative treatments such as lamp black and goose grease for interior ironwork. Now I don't think I would care to sit on a chair which had been treated with lamp black and goose fat whilst wearing my white tux![blink]
As i originally put, it's up to experimentation.  Finishing is such a huge subject (same as it is with wood.)
4. I have used  vinegar and salt mixed together to remove fire scale from copper (as opposed to using  jewellers pickle) Worked surprisingly well! With this though it isn't the cost, it is what is the best option, in this case it happens to be the cheapest!
5. Miss Babs, i don't think they'll need such treatment. A wire brush and should be enough. Get a tiny one for tight bits. Maybe some wet and dry paper to finish. Do it wet and get it really clean. Dry it really well and then apply some beeswax and linseed oil as already said. It'd be a huge shame to paint them.
6. North Dordogne: Foire des potiers de Bussière-Badil (Dordogne), les 17-18-19-20 mai 2007. Marché des Tisserands de Varaignes - les 26,27 et 28 mai 2007
7. Could you get hold of some hairdressing magazines etc in English??
8. Hi Samantha Sorry only just seen this...bit slow!! I've sent you a PM.
9. You could try with either a wax or oil. Both will need reapplying occasionally, but if it's inside and stays dry shouldn't be too much of a problem. Loads of options, one recipe for example is a mix of beeswax and linseed oil heated up, but you can experiment. Even just normal vegetable oil could be used. Also some wax based furniture pastes /shoe polish...etc. etc As long as it has wax or oil in it. Personally i like to use beeswax or grate polish on indoor metal.
