  1. As a post grad student in Oxford he will no doubt have been invited to the induction course for international students. The post grad population is incredibly multi cultural and the support services in the colleges are generally good. As a middle aged person with undergrad aged children I find the drinking culture shocking but I really think it is no better or worse than other UK towns. Most of the international students I come across really enjoy their time in Oxford although some of them do find the pressures of the work daunting to start with and it seems that sometimes the peculiarly Oxford aspects of the place are what makes it special for them. You mention that his English is good but if he does have any problems with it then there may be appropriate courses at the Language Centre. Good luck to him.
  2. I think I've seen an internet cafe in Ducey but not having used it I don't know if it would be high speed or not.
  3. I really enjoyed this - I was meant to be doing the ironing but just sat and read instead.
  4. We are resident in UK and have income from French lettings. Last year the forms we filled in were 2042 and 2042C, as well as this we filled in 2031 as we have registered our house as a commercial business. It seems to have been the right forms and we just had to pay tax Contribution Sur Revenu Locatif at 2.5% of turnover as, once we did the accounts we hadn't made a profit to pay income tax on. Hope that helps. Trish

    Aga etc

Don't want to be a killjoy but Agas are hot in summer. Here in Oxfordshire it was pleasant morning and evening but in a heatwave the kitchen became difficult to cook in late afternoon. I wouldn't want one any further south. We have just had ours taken out as we are redoing kitchen and as the children have grown up and I have gone back to work it no longer fitted our lifestyle. Having said that, now the evenings are chilly I miss it but I'm sure I will get over that when the central heating is put in. tg
  6. I don't know if the same applies in France as construction methods may be different but we have a quarry tiled floor laid directly on the old earth floor here in UK. One thing I would say is, if it might be damp underneath, do not try and seal it. We made this mistake and got horrible white patches where damp was trapped and we had to remove it. All we did was put down an old rug when the children were small so it was more comfortable for playing on and it is better not to wash it in wet weather as it takes for ever to dry.
  7. The notaire automatically requested one for us in Brittany. This was in April.
  8. I have just had the awful experience of nearly double booking my house - I am now so upset for the nice sounding family that I have had to turn away that I am trying to find them other accommodation. Has anyone got a house for a family of 6 from 4 - 7 June. Group includes war veteran who has tickets to attend ceremony in Arromanches, the older couple are disabled. My house is about 2 hours from Arromanches and they were willing to travel that far. Please let me know if you have or know of anything and I will pass it on. Trish

  10. My understanding was that it was the type of work that mattered not where you lived. I asked Britline who we bank with and they quite happily sent me the paperwork to sign. They then supplied me with a special cheque book which also has the forms to send off to Cheque d'emploi service together with addressed envelopes. They obviously know I have UK address. Trish
