1. I have just had this 12 year old PC upgraded to IE8. Orange my ISP told me under no circumstances use IE9, they suggested there were problems with IE9.
2. You have done well to only just find this. Sadly in France all motor vehicles must be insured whilst unused.
3. Life without internet is frought with problems.... I was being to think my name was Franz Kafka - trying to get money in Barclays internet accounts moved around was screamingly annoyingly difficult. Especially when they had invented their own security questions and answers which they hadn't thought to tell me so many calls ended within seconds. It took weeks before someone at Barclays took pity and finally told me the answers to the security questions and answers they had made up. They were totally fabricated - they reckoned they had taken them from 'files' or I had told them this nonsense. More worrying was Nationwide an Ebond had matured - they did send a letter saying the money had been put elsewhere until we told them where to put it. When I finally got onto the web two weeks ago from my brothers computer in UK the money had seemingly disappeared! The branch eventually said we had a 'New Portfolio' (but we couldn't seen it online) - they said they would sort this out but a week later it still couldn't be seen. Saw another numpty who was slightly more on the ball and accessed the computer at HQ found the money and transferred it to where it could be seen. I have grave doubts about the way this money disappeared from view. A forgetful person could easily lose this money - or if someone died the executor or partner of the diseased would never know the money was there. I also moaned about the money Nationwide have wasted over the years sponsoring that inglorious game called football. The branch manager told me my views were unpatriotic as football was the nations game. I told him since when has patriotism come before giving the saver a better interest rate and that football and UK would not be my first choice to display such a stupid sentiment and why weren't the savers asked before money was handed out to Ltd companies. I also uncovered a really black comedy being carried out by a dodgy bunch of developers wanting to build nearly a thousand houses on green belt land in Northamptonshire. The developers are hiding behind a charity that is applying for the planning, but really a big bunch of vested interest is behind the development. There is a campaign against the proposed development but it seems to be run by the same people behind the bid - what a great idea! A real Alan B'stard idea. The first public consultation by a rather posh estate agents is this weekend - timed to coincide with the Heineken Cup which most blokes will be watching. Ain't life fun...
4. It's working but slowly.... Long and boring story... I have dial up. Phone line was changed and from then on I could link to the server but no pages would open - just got error messages. Orange said it was my computer, my modem, my wiring, just about anything they could think of all of which I disproved. They said I could have broadband and after 3 months it never arrived so I rang and they said give it longer, then said I couldn't have it but could have a faster connection. I finally went to the Marie who said "Wait" I said I have been waiting nearly six months, how much longer... I won't hold my breath. They offered to send technichians and made appointments but never turned up. They had the line checked over and over again. Bizarely I found I could pick up email through another piece of software. Now loaded Explorer 8 and it works but slower than 6 months ago. Now going to look and see if you can buy more modern computers that have inbuilt or external dialup modems. Happy Days.
5. I have been unable to connect to the Orange server for dialup for 10 days. I thought it was my phone line as it crackled so a telecom man came and checked it and said all was OK. When I dial the Orange ISP I get a engaged signal or lots of different error messages. Sometimes I actually get the start up page but it ends my connection shorty after. I have had a horrible week and had problems as I cannot reach my ebank. I have contacted Orange Helpdesk and we have over the last week tried different ways to connect - reinstalled software and they reckon my modem is broken. I think I proved it's not as I connected my Mac to Orange and it also cannot maintain a connection. I have got on today by using a UK 'free' ISP service and the net is working quicker than when I was using Orange. So there is nothing wrong with my modem. Can anyone suggest a French Free ISP as dialling UK must be costing me a small fortune? (I want to use this UK 'free' connection as little as poss due to cost so if someone could give me free French connect logon details as below it would save me time and money.) Further can anyone suggest what is going on with Orange as I am no computer buff? Only good news is that it seems they are installing a new exchange nearby so I will be able to get ADSL within two weeks - I may be cynical but are they messing me about to push me into ADSL? Orange deny that the work at the exchange should disrupt my dialup? I have no commercial interest but if you are stuck - I am using the following 'free' dialup ISP. Tel: 0844 535 2000  (it works dialling 00448445352000 from France). User: free Password: dialup Mailserver: mailfree-dialup.net Very greatful to them too as it works!!
6. It's amazing how stupid filmakers think we are. I can understand the press and internet showing an inappropriate picture as they just blindly use library pictures in a rush and newspapers have a short life and things can easily be changed on the internet. Film and TV are reshown time and time again so you would think they would try a little harder. Perhaps we should set up a register of detail experts for the media to use when it matters. PS I really annoys me when they dub the wrong sounds onto motorcycles.
7. I was very glad you noticed this trailer for the commonwealth games. I have read the book The Kite Runner sadly the author shows that he knows little of these kites - but haven't seen the film. It couldn't have been a clip from the Kite Runner as the kites are Indian not Afghanistan kites as the Afghan kites are a quite different shape  and are slower. Plus no Afgany is going to make a kite with the India flag on it. I make, fly and fight these Indian Fighting Kites and was surprised and pleased to see a short sequence of them on TV. Unfortunately kites are used in advertising to make a link to freedom and green issues. I loved the young boys excitment of getting a patang in India flag colours and rushing home to fight. What made me very annoyed is that kite flying is not in the commonwealth (what a horrible word with all it's connotations) games. Kites were last a demonstration sport in the Olympics in Paris in the early 1900s. Even more annoying is watching the studio where they show graphics in the background showing simple european kites with long streaming tails!! Indian kites do not have streamers as tails as they are not necessary and would make the kites too stable and thus uncontrolable. I have just got the BBCs email so am going to complain at the crass use of an iconic Indian symbol. PS In India kites are only flown to fight not just put in the air for fun it is a serious sport and very skilled. PPS Rose I am not far from you in 24 so if you'd like to fly one of these kites I would be only to pleased to teach you.
8. Not a pleasant thing to happen. At least you know the problem so can make his last days special. Good luck.
9. ... it is deep in  the heart of woodland the small problem is it only has two rooms. To avoid getting planning consent can I develop underground or put up a temporary structure like a wooden chalet?
10. I would love to suggest something to give you a full body workout. But all you need is 20 minutes a day of walking fairly fast - it is cheap and good for your health and you will meet people!
11. Yes weather is a a bit wet. Have you concidered getting a ferry to Santander? - Spain is a lot warner and less wet hopefully at this time of year. Why are you setting off on a trip at this time of year?
12. From my observation and experience the French use their own or hire cherry pickers.
13. Lets hope he gets in good job in jail it's going to take a while to pay back 4.9 billion euros.
14. I think the French are imaginative and use magical shrunken tape measures when they measure their houses. I am concidering putting a kitchen or toilet in every room or emptying the entire house on January 1 to  avoid paying this tax.
15. Isn't the easiest way to be born to French parents?
16. Yes the army are back in our neck of the woods again - playing games. They had girly soldiers too and came down the lane by the side of my house looking across the fields towards another lane. So I went out and said there was nobody down there as I had just walked a loop through the woods in that area. I told them whre other troops were but it seems they were having their own fun setting up an ambush for the truck they had arrived on?? I asked why they kept coming here and they said it was a lovely place and they were back for three weeks. They were officers training and had come down from barracks in Paris - I would have thought they could have found a forest closer to Paris to play in. I asked if they could pick up their spent shell casings, they apologised but said they couldn't always find them all. I told them how we have great fun with the unspent blanks they leave around. I guess it's the full French experience having a dozen soldiers with light and heavy machine guns outside your kitchen window - I offered tea and was asked for Earl Grey with milk please.
17.
Quote:" France has a long, bloody, and shameful history of persecuting anyone who doesn’t bow down and kiss their ass. While embracing every sin imaginable, this filthy nation violently persecutes anyone who’s not catholic and has taken to imprisoning and fining those who dare to stand up and say that it’s not okay to be a fag!" 18. Sadly money makes money and money does not make better people.
19. Call me a pevert but I enjoy pickled onion finger.
20. No but it goes after a few weeks. Nearly as nice as stinky pickled onion finger which lasts bearly as long. I usually grind the walnut with my feet on the ground then pick up the nut - but then I am a neanderthal.
21. I had a result last week I went to the bottle bank and someone had left 2 big boxes of old kieler type jars. They are in lovely clean condition although without rubber seals and have some interesting embossed logos on the jars. My neighbour picked their grapes yesterday and gave me loads, previously I made wine but it didn't turn out too good so was thinking of making grape jam - though have loads of jams as keep being given fruit, cherries, then plums and recently figs. Any other ideas of how to use grapes?
22. A lot of villages and towns do have free municipal camping but may not be open at this time of year. The French are fairly relaxed about overnight 'wild' camping. I have seen people camping on roundabouts. You also often see people camping near beaches. If you are concerned about who owns the land and may not approve, why not ask at farms they will probably say yes. Most French houses have far more land than in UK and would also probably let you camp overnight if you asked politely. I remember camping at midnight on the seafront in Cherbourg with my parents awaiting the next mornings ferry. We got awoken by the gendarmes but they said we could stay until the next morning.
23.
Dear Dog still (just) in harness and I from time to time wear a nice suit and yes advise clients who in my experience are genuine clients who simply wish to reduce their (legally) liability to taxation. Here a question is this wrong? Another question behind limited liability companies and not ones with £2 issued share capital and lots of Directors Loans are shareholders who invest and is it wrong that they seek to protect investments and to receive reward for investments? Here I am not talking about those who were are one-time supporters of the Conservative Party with alleged links to some island somewhere in the West Indies region. Then of course one Philip Green and it is not he but his wife who receive most of the dividends from his investments and he of course has been brought in by the Coalition to advise on business and efficiency? I find that amazing and he of course has a calendar in front of him every day with someone with a calculator and the calculation is of course days spent in the UK Here I must stress that this is entirely legal and some bigwig in London drafted a very expensive paper for one Philip Green.. Sometime earlier in the piece it was the then norm to have unlimited liability companies and where those who ran the business were responsible for all of the debts of the company. These were traditionally agents let us say for shirts and the like and they did not wish to disclose to their competitors the amount of their commission and thus no accounts at Companies House. Finally and something that I was very closely involved with. Now a PLC and with a share price of £11.00 and very profitable. Quickly moving on the Directors charged their houses to the bank put capital in and developed an idea. They were exposed! However first year £1M turnover bottom line £500,000 profit. IN those days one could claim 100% writing down allowances for investments. There was no way that the profit could be shielded. I was part of a transaction where we put together within house a leasing business and we leased to A covenants such as local authorities and the like. We continued with this profitable side until 100% allowances were withdrawn. The Directors did not wish to avoid tax they simply wished to continue R % D within the business. They now employ 4000+ people in the UK and overseas have received countless Queens awards for export and both Directors (not me) Knighted. Is what we came up with morally ethically wrong? Essentially what I am saying good bad everywhere including lawyers including Barristers including Bankers and indeed labourers!
I would suggest that the present laws need changing. Philip Green should not be able to avoid paying his way by threatening to leave the UK - I'd say cheerio to him. I would suggest investors take the downside as well as the upside and shouldn't avoid liability. I can only say that my dealings with finance/leasing companies gave me a very worrying view of the way they used the allowance system and the way they traded. Business shouldn't be about using loopholes in the sytem to make a quick buck.
24.
Directors of most small companies are required to give personal guarantees (secured on assets such as their home etc) for any borrowings - so the security of 'limited liability status' is pretty 'limited'. Mrs R51
Sounds fine except their personal guarantees are mostly only on borrowings which make up a very small amount of their turnover. When limited companies go bust thereare usually lots of unsecured creditors.
