  1. Hi I'm in a similar position. I have a car coming up to 4 years old. I have another older car and get reminders, but they come from my local CT depot. I don't think they are sent from a national database, but it is possible as CT depots appear to have standard software. The CT technician keys in your vehicle details, and all the checks are listed. Emission data, brake test results, etc. are automatically recorded on the certificate. Despite this, I was passed with a list of things I should take a look at. These were things that would have been a fail in UK : Bald patch on inside of tyre 1 headlamp not working at all Hazard light switch not working No plate lamp bulb gone etc And I didn't see him check seat belts, wipers and washers. I haven't come across a published list of checks, but it seems to be rather flexible. Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com

  3. Hi South of France is a big place. Most of the farms around here are based on vine and olives. The Camargue has cattle. It may be worth looking here : http://www.immodumidi.com/ Bonne chance Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com

  6. Hi I use AOL for the connection. Only the connection ! I then use IE, and various email services. And the only AOL emails I receive are spam. Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  7. Hi I've come across a company aiming to open a nationwide chain of British grocers in France. They are currently committed to 4 or 5 locations. Not sure if this is advertising, but the link is : http://www.bestofbritish.fr If it's out of order, doubtless the moderator will delete it. And I apologise in advance if this is so. BTW, I am not Mr Best of British ! Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com

  10. Hi I wrote this in reply to a question on another forum. It could be useful to those here ? The rules / etiquette for boules .................. Boules (or should it be petanque ?) is a game played by men of a certain age in shady southern village areas in the late afternoon. Men play boule while their wives prepare the dinner. Maybe the avoidance of helping in the kitchen explains the undoubted popularity of the game. It is essential you speak fluent French, including local dialects, rustic slang, and local swearwords. Obviously, you will have already practised all the local finger gestures. To play you need to be able to talk about matters of importance -the young girl (with good lungs) who has just moved into the village, what the boulangeres wife said, and complain about Parisians and other undesirables. A brother in law who lives next door to the man who cleans Madame Chiracs car can be an invaluable source when debating international diplomatic policy. The crucial part is to be able to meet all the requirements without removing a smouldering gaulloise from your bottom lip except for the second most important part. That is the ability to consume vast quantities of pastis. Oh, and I nearly forgot, you throw big silver balls at a little black ball. But I don't think this is compulsory. After dinner you take your garden chair into the village and join whichever group you belong to. (In our village the top group is judged to be more intellectual, but I suspect getting a transfer to another group involves moving house) Then continue to chat until late. This part definitely is played without balls. So now you are all ready to move to France Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com

  14. LAST EDITED ON 22-Jan-04 AT 07:14 AM (GMT) Hi its one of those things that you know will be worth doing, but never get round to trying. I've got the Swedish version smoker, and a sack of sawdust I bought at the same time. Both 7 years old and unopened ! I use hickory chips soaked in water on the BBQ. In Sweden I tried an instant smoker ....... it was a perforated aluminium foil bag with sawdust inside. Just put it on top of the BBQ charcoal when hot. We love smoked food. Someone brought us a complete hot smoked salmon from Sweden over Xmas. We ate it the next day ! I must get round to using the smoker this year ! Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  15. "It is always la vraie cuisine de bonne femme that does it for me, and on that day, by one of those miraculous chances that changes not only your day but something in your life too, here I was, quite unwittingly, being offered a transcendent experience." 17. Hi On the advice of my accountant, I've been invoicing UK clients without VAT. Similarly, I haven't attempted to reclaim the UK VAT on my expenses. Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  18. Hi It may well be something to do with royalties & copyright ? Its normally old stuff. The French had much of the 60's & 70's stuff later, but sung in French. Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  19. Hi Something like "a meeting to study the changes made to the connection" Does that make sense ? Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  20. Hi it's a volatile sort of business. Lot's of people offer it on the net, but it only makes economic sense for a few. 1) Immigrants with an old farm and a few converted outbuildings do it themselves 2)The season is limited to school holidays + easter in most areas 3)It only works in an area with a concentration of holiday lettings. Here, some ORPI estate agents offer it as a service along the coast. Inland there doesn't seem to be enough demand. If there was a service nearby, I'd probably use it. 21. Hi What does it matter what we think. The ABC audit of circulation is the bible in this. Are the results published ? Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
  22. Hi this just happened to us. We had to get 100 signatures (with the neighbouring village) to get on the list for ADSL. We got the signatures but don't know when it will happen. We are quite remote ............ so there is hope. I think there is an element of luck. I know of a tiny village (about 40 people) who has ADSL. Maybe the lines pass through it on the way to somewhere bigger ? Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com

  25. Hi Not as bad here as in the Rhone valley, but bad enough. Photos taken 4 December in Place du Marche Sommieres. You can just see the water line near the top of the arches. The bar in the photo reopened at 18.30 that day. Peter The Languedoc Page : http://tlp.netfirms.com
