  1. We looked at doing the same But by the time we put the cost of the van /mileage/tolls/fuel/crossing it all added up . So we looked at getting a part load with a removals company and flying back. It worked out 100 euros more to fly and have some one else do the lifting and driving And we used public transport for the first in some  20 years in the uk and all went well !! From 24 to oxford shire
  2. Its not sweet corn its maze and its used to feed the dumb arse  cows that don’t now how to eat grass . and is left to be completely dry . AND the EU pay them to grow it !!!!!!!!!
  3. Best thing you can do is to sell the bike before you come over as if you intend to live hear then you will have to spend lots of time and effort to get it onto French plates. Oh and money , So I wouldn’t worry about the cost of tyres (they are cheaper than uk as you will have pounds to spend )
  4. so do we but not much , but then are chimney is kind of big
  5. As long as the existing slates are sound and don’t just look it (a lot of the time with slate it’s the head of the slate ,the bit you don’t see when on the roof)that is shot Then you can take out any damaged slates individually and replace them as well as patch  big holes . You need to ask for a quote for just replacing /making good . And ask as many tilers as you can get to come around .
  6. Well what can I say to Dave’s comment,   (the brits built at a lower angle) ??? Wrong Slates can be used down to 17 degrees some times lower if you increase the head lap  The average roof pitch in the uk is 45  degrees and up !! Felt was introduced into roofs in the uk to prevent the ingress of the real fine snow in the early 20s/30s and as a way to sell it  was said to reduce drafts . It started as two paper sheets with a fine layer of bitumen in-between that had to be draped   in-between the rafters at least 6”to 8”due to the fact that it would contract  and split if not draped . Then some time later full on bitumen felt ( 1F as its called in the uk ) was introduced and is still used to day . (to cut a long story short) after 30 years in the roofing game in the uk And not to bore you al with the facts of this and that. If your going to the expense of having your roof re-done (1) get it insulated (2) get it felted (3) if you can afford to have Tyvec as its bomb proof  but not used  much in SW France But costs are high , but then you pay the price you get the best
  7. We have been using a Garmin set up on the bike and in the car all over Europe for the past 7 years we updated to a newer model. It finds every destination and every turn with out fault and even tells you when in the middle of roundabouts to take the appropriate exit. And always picks up on at least 4/6 satellites   I think the garage are clue less and must think the same of you to believe you would fall for that one. If it was the war in Iraq that made the yanks adjust the satellites then thousands of people would have the same problem  , But then  that’s why Europe is setting up there own system so that the yanks can not mess with it
  8. If buying in France do as much research on that house that you won’t, as you can ask as many peps as you can find. Ask all the agents what they know it helps. Most places in France are over priced my wife and I were ready to pay 135000 euros for are house, to us it was worth it. But with in a week we found out that the guy had been trying to sell it for 14 months he had had offers of 130000 and turned them down. We ended paying 76000 including fees because we found out that if he had not sold it to us in march this year the bank would have owned it buy the end of April the 1st .  He had bought it 8 years before for 60000 euros and in the end was happy to walk away with next to nothing, Rather than loss it, all and all we did was to ask as much as we could !!    Dept 24

Hi all would appreciate if some one could give  me a few hints We will  be moving to dep 16 ,1st week in jan and have a friends cottage to stay in while We look and find are permanent residence. We would like to buy a second hand French car when we get there , but do not wish to use the address at witch we will be staying to register the car . Is there any way of   registering a car when you don’t have a permanent address .   Or any way of buying a car and then registering it later , as in we have the log book but do not change it until we have a permanent address   This may sound dodgy but do not wont to use the address we will be staying at     thanks for any Replies
