phone the local mairie - private will mean the local catholic school, they follow the same curriculum as state, not much difference really. The mairie will know about places etc. and who to contact at the school - go on www.pagesjaune.fr and get the number. Your son will be going into year CM1 at age nine. dyson

I have an insurance (which is the norm over here) for my daughter at school and she recently had her sports bag stolen from her school peg, trainers, jogging suit etc. I phoned the insurance MAE because I saw that cartables, fournitures et manuels scolaires are covered up to 65 euros. To claim this I have to gather all this paperwork:- a) goto the gendarmerie and porte plaint reporting the theft and therefore obtaining receipt b) get an attestation from the school secretary as to the date and place it went missing c) copy of the school weekly timetable to precis when sport takes place at the school d) photocopy of the MAE insurance certificate e) attestation sur lhonneur from me describing the bag and contents, with original receipts (if poss) Drives you mad doesnt it, do they think people have nothing better to do! dyson

Just to let you see the unemployment figures for various areas of France - on the front of Ouest France yesterday there was a figure for Basse Normandie which stated 40% of young people are unemployed - morale is low - on the nationwide young communists paper there are figures of 37% of young people are unemployed (about 600,000) - 20% of people below 30 years of age live below the poverty line - it's not looking too hot is it ....... what do you think the government should do?
