  1. Thanks for that, I assumed it was but you can never be sure. Gary
  2. I'm sure this has probably been answered before, but I can find no reference. Is Capital Gains Tax payable on profit made from the sale of a property or the whole amount. Thanking everyone in advance. Gary
  3. Can anyone tell me what the norm regarding felt under slates is in France. The battens I looked at in Point P did not look treated. So do they use a breathable felt or just ordinary. Thanks in advance. Gary
  4. Thank you, after my children have taken the 'p', there's not much left.
  5. I haven't a problem going up a size it's the availability of decent timber at a reasonable price. Gary
  6. Building regs give 9x2s on 400 centres 4.79 metres. It is actually the flat roof of a single storey extension that will one day (in the distant future) be a sun terrace. Thanks Gary
  7. Thanks for the advice, at the moment it is only used every six weeks or so. I'll look out for the Tarax. Thanks Gary
  8. I am bringing a youngman staging board that is 6 metres long over in two weeks. It usually travels no problem on the roof bars of my Renault Trafic. The overhang is about 60cms front and back. Are there any laws on this in France? Hope someone can help Gary
  9. 9 x 2 is a standard size for UK joists, spaced at 400 centres they will span the 4.8 metres I need. If 75 x 225 (3 x 9) is the norm in France then so be it. I t just means I can space them at 450 instead. Assuming that madrier means joist or such in French, what does 'bastaing' mean please. Thanks for info Gary
  10. Is there a method of commissioning a new fosse septique. Thanks Gary
  11. Can anyone suggest a supplier of 50 x 225 joists in the Vire, Manche area. Also has anyone heard of posi-joists in France. Cheers Gary
  12. I've just used it to install a toilet system with no problems.
  13. I'm going over twice next month, my intention is to buy the oak, store some at our barn, take what I need back to the UK, build the necessary and transport back again. It'll probably be cheaper than buying in the UK. I do have a small planer/thicknesser that I could take over but it wouldn't be man enough for the larger timber. What do you mean by 'small' quantities. Gary
  14. We are south of Vire, just outside a small village called Gathemo. My workshop is the UK at the moment although I will be moving equipment out once the workshop is built. I need the oak for the doors/window frames. Gary
  15. I need to source French oak in the Basse Normandie area. Does anyone know of wood yards or mills in the area please. I have full facilities for dimensioning etc. Thanks Gary
  16. Thanks for that. The Le clerc in Vire has a separate store called Brico Le Clerc which has a very good range, but will be shut by the time we arrive. Again thanks. Gary
  17. We're renovating a barn in Basse Normadie and have started the plumbing. However we are going out on Friday afternoon 4th May and need to get fittings for use that night. Does anyone know of a Le clerc or other suitable supplier on the way from Eurotunnel along the A16 towards Le Havre. We think we saw one at Boulogne but from the Motorway we are not too sure which one it was. Thanks in advance Gary
  18. Thank you both, I'm checking with Vodafone now for prices.
  19. I have a GPRS phone which when connected to a lap top via bluetooth can access the internet in the UK. Does anyone know if this will work in France. Cheers Gary
  20. I am still in the UK, unfortunately the recent slow down on house sales has delayed our move out there. I am writing an email to them, but with my dodgy French I'm not sure what sort of reply I'll get. Gary
  21. Does anyone know what documentation the CdM would require when registering as a self-employed carpenter. I have heard different stories as to whether NVQs are acceptable and also that just trading for several years in the UK will suffice. Thanks Gary
  22. My idea had never been to compete on price, but more on quality and more specialised paints than the sheds sell. Message in you inbox.
  23. Having read some of the postings on this website, we are thinking of opening a Paint shop in the Poitou Charente area and as part of the market research for this project we would like the views of the people that could be purchasing from us. The points we need to clarify are: Location: Would the shop need to be in a large village or are people prepared to travel, and if so how far. Stock: What sorts of paints are required. Delivery: Would a same day delivery service (at a premium obviously) be useful. Opening hours: With many people working weekends would a short opening period (if allowed) on Sundays be useful. We are at present researching prices, suppliers and laws etc, regarding the above.
  24. My wife, three children and I are seriously considering moving to the Poitou Charente area. The original plan was to convert and let out gites, but from messages on this website and other sources that idea does not seem able to sustain a reasonable lifestyle. The main point is how much work is there for a carpenter/cabinet maker in this general area. Can anyone help? Gary.
