1. I think it would depend on the life insurance, no cover , no mortgage. I don't know if ours is typical but rather than the payments going up everytime there is an interest hike, we pay the same but the repayment term increases.
2. If you are looking for a particular type of work, go directly to companies etc with your CV, don't just wait until you see an advert. Being proactive, hard work and can often be very disappointing BUT can pay dividends too.
3. I don't know if Moonpig has changed its postal service lately but I am finding that cards are taking a lot longer to get to France than they used to. I know this because I use their birthday reminder to give me a nudge when I need to order a card and last year they all arrived in plenty of time, this year they aren't. I'm going to contact them and wondered if anyone else that uses them was finding their deliveries arriving later.
4. I like carrefour and find them the best of the rest ( of those that I have shopped at), the choice and price is much better. I like their Regent's Park range of crumpets and scones , with the little story about the English Miss Pitbullmood [:)]
5.
I've visited the website and found the table of dates quoted by Gardener.  Perhaps my brain isn't on top form today, but I don't understand it.  It says that my avis d'imposition will be sent out some time after August 6, or else some time after August 9, or possibly some time after September 23. Will some kind person take pity on me and explain this?
I'm guessing that the dates correspond with when you were obliged to send in your tax form. Eg, those who have to submit their tax forms earlier , receive their avis' first etc.
6. I wasn't sure if the cougettes etc would freeze ok but have frozen it anway.

Dogs' mess

It's not just dogs, cats carry the parasite too. Ours cats were feral kittens and apparently likely to have been carriers but afaik regular worming solves the problem.
8.
Will,   the report highlighted the standard risks of all mountain town (I compared with several other mountain resorts and they were all the same).  The compromis de vente included a map showing the various areas of the town classified as low risk, moderate risk, and high risk. My plot was classified as low risk. However, things have now changed because the glacier sits right on top of the chalet I am planning to buy and that specific area is now at high risk.   Thanks for the advice   Ugo
Was there a date on this map which specified that your plot was low risk? May be worth finding out if there is a more up to date one. I don't know the ins and outs of the rules of vice cachĂ©, but I would start cataloging every reference to this mountain glacier because I find it hard to believe that the seller didn't know about this potential problem. Just a thought, did  you include a caluse on your compris that you need to secure a mortgage for this property? If so, tell the bank that this property is now high risk, they'll refuse to lend the money and you can pull out with no penalty.
9. Sadly- no basil, but  dried herbes de Provence were used with some extra fresh ones from the garden and it was very nice. Next question. Lots left over, best way of keeping it ? We are experimenting storing food with those kilner style jars, can ratatouille be kept like that ?
10. There appears to be a consensus in recipes re the vegetables used in ratatouille but not the herbs. What herbs give ratatouille the best taste? Quick replies would be appreciated as OH is in the kitchen as I write.
11. If you have a look at the information taken from the banks website rather than from the Daily Mail, you will see that the Islamic Account has the SAME FEES for being overdrawn etc as the cash acount. Now your gripe was that they were getting a better deal / no fees etc and I have proved by pasting factual information from the website that they aren't. So whatever point you are trying to make, yeah I've failed to see it, so please spell it out.

13. What point would that be then? Banks offering a service that suits the requirements of some of their customers. No different really from English speaking banks in France , they too are open to anybody but are designed to meet the needs of certain residents.
14. Why? The account is open to any one, but I can't see any advantages.
15. He was found guilty but managed to obtain a retrial (twice). The jury didn't find him not guilty couldn't agree whether he was guilty either. So under English law he had to be released, which isn't quite the same thing as being found completely innocent. May be that it why he hasn't been awarded compensation? His first wife and children were quite quick to distance themselves from him if I remember and his being released from prison hasn't changed that according to one paper.
16. Is there much of a difference (outside of sale times) between the prices of ikea kitchens France v UK+ the cost of getting it here? I find the Ikea computer kitchen planner fiddly and longwinded , so don't want to install the UK version to compare bif anyone can give me a quick answer.
17. I don't think French is needed nor subtitles to lip read Rooney.
18. I know this site has been mentioned previously but this link may help you find the next less expensive way of spending abroad. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money This is also quoted from money saving expert Chris Rhodes, Nationwide's product and marketing director, says: "The changes are to stop people getting the account just to use overseas. If you bank with Nationwide and support our products we want to give you a reward. "What I don’t think is right is to cross-subsidise customers who choose to stay with Lloyds, for example, but use us for travel." His aim appears to be to stop people using Nationwide as a cheap spare 'holiday account',which may be fair enough, but in doing so, as stated before, they do seem to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater . He has not discerned the difference between holiday customers and those who genuinely bank with Nationwide but now live abroad. The 1.4 million customers cannot all be just travellers.
19. I was able to view my 2010 avis d'impot on line this morning which was a earlier than expected.[:)]
20. The US and Oz are two that I know of that do this already. I'd bet it's not even new news.  I haven't read the small print on gaining French citizenship, but I wouldn't be surprised if what to do to get it revoked wasn't in there somewhere.
21. I don't doubt that people wear different types of underwear,it was just remarkaby fortuitous for Clarkson that not only did the poor woman fall sufficiently hard enough for her clothing to rise extremely high, but that she was also sporting stockings and a thong. If the event happened as he described and she was wearing rather ordinary M&S pants, it wouldn't have had the same impact.
22. My FiL who had prostate problems needed the loo urgently on a trip to Paris a few years ago and the cafe wouldn't allow him to use the toilet until we had placed an order. One coke and 5 straws! [:)]
23. Marym2  What make me wonder is how long before this is a daily event? as its becoming in England????????? http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23860807-claim-of-islamic-veil-bus-ban-thrown-out.do
I wasn't aware it was even close to becoming a daily event. As for Clarkson well he's just a gobby prat who makes a good living by being controversial. An event as apparently unusual as that happening in London, perhaps the taxi driver will come forward and corroborate his story but I won't hold my breathe.
24. It's slower but less chance of being gazumped etc. If you have met the asking price, the buyer is generally committed to the sale. If you have negotiated and agreed less, once the seller has signed the compromis , subject to certain conditions, they are committed. If you have signed the compromis and more than 7 days has passed then , subject to specified get out clauses, you are committed also. Not much will happen next month because most of France stops for August. The notaire will plod on and do what he/ she needs to do and usually inform you only when and where necessary eg to send you copies of reports, the final acte for checking etc. I'd say 3 months all being well , you should have the keys unless the buyers are waiting on a new build or something. In fact you should have a provisional date in the compromis for the acte to vente to be signed by , as the agent will not want to wait forever for their cut. If you want to scream at this stage, then France may not be the place for you. Insert wink: smiley face!
