Weather watching

Recommended Posts

I'm keeping an eye (from the UK) on the weather in 16 & 17  with a view to moving there. Could someone living there say what it's been like the past week, and what it's like now?

meteo.fr has shown rain most of the past week.

At this moment - Sunday morning - meteo.fr and yahoo weather show a vast difference --

La Rochelle cloudy 14C
http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/FRXX0044_c.html?force_units=1

La Rochelle sunny 19C
http://www.meteofrance.com/FR/index.jsp

Which is nearer the truth?

Cheers
JT

Try http://www.xcweather.co.uk/index.php. This gives the current weather (no history although it does give a wind forecast for the next week). The weather report is normally less than half a hour old and should be reliable as, you may notice that many of the points are airports !! (though some are automated buoys at sea). Also, the reported weather seems to match what I experience locally.

It covers France and the UK (there is a combo box to select France or UK and all you do is put your mouse over the place you want to view. You can also select what aspect of the weather is displayed using another combo box (probably on the left).

I have found AccuWeather “Current Conditions” (e.g. http://wwwa.accuweather.com/index-world-forecast.asp?zipcode=angers%2C+france&submit=Go&partner=accuweather for Angers) totally unreliable. It might actually be reliable but just very out of date or very averages or something – bottom line is that what they report as “current” is not what is happening over the last hour or so.

Also, you can find detailed reports on the departmental climate from Meteo France on a monthly basis (going back several years) on, e.g. http://www.meteofrance.com/FR/climat/dpt_tempsdumois.jsp?LIEUID=DEPT16 (for Charente) or http://www.meteofrance.com/FR/climat/dpt_tempsdumois.jsp?LIEUID=DEPT17. Each month is a separate PDF document but this describes what has happened over the month. Will take a bit of time to get an impression though should be accurate. To get the older months, there is a “Archives” Combo Box below the “map” (left of the two columns below the map).

Also, as a useful summary of climate, http://www.meteo.fr/meteonet/meteo/pcv/cdm/dept16/images/zcdm24.gif and http://www.meteo.fr/meteonet/meteo/pcv/cdm/dept17/images/zcdm24.gif (again from Meteo France).

Both these are longe rterm historic and not really "weather watching" but might help you decide if the climate is what you are looking for.

something I've noticed with weather forecasts here is that the symbol they use seems to be the worst possible

eg. averses matinales, symbol of big grey cloud with rain: Actually a very nice day with a 10-minute rain shower in the morning.
