Suscribe to Living France magazine or French Property News for ads by agents and immobiliers in the regions you want to search. No one on here can help you personally as it is your preference which may not be the same as anyone else. Remember prices are going up all the time here in France now and you will need to budget for this plus fees and taxes which aren't always mentioned when buying. If buying to renovate, work on that the purchase price is about only 18-20% of the true cost of the finished renovation as costs are dearer in France for workmen and materials. You also need to consider the recent changes in ferries being terminated, the yearly cost of travelling here (can be £500 return most times) and don't rely on low cost airlines as a reason for buying, they come and go just like that. The one true way to find what you want is to actually visit a region and look in notaires books and agents, some will have prices inflated for UK buyers in popular regions too.

Not sure if this helps - We live just down the road from you in Cheshire and have a house in Mayenne. We travel via Le Shuttle and will be continuing to do so even though they no longer have The Property Owners Club. It is convenient for us as all motorway(average run 4hrs - worst 6 hrs to Kent). We generally find that the whole journey takes us around 10-11hrs, which will speed up at the end of next year with the autoroute from Rouen to Le Mans. The best thing to do is to go and stay in the area you choose and have a look around the local Estate Agents, which is how we did it. We found that all connections we made through the internet let us down as the property we expected to view was already sold.Old fashioned leg work is the best way and if you do not speak french then employ a translator (friend of a friend usually) who could go with you.
