Christmas break

We are thinking of taking a Christmas break 4-5 days and would appreciate any information about a traditional celebration perhaps in a hotel in Paris. By traditional we are quite happy to follow French customs but want to avoid anything too 'tacky'

Any sensible suggestions would be welcome. If not Paris is there any other part of France that would make a good Christmas break We live in Lot et Garonne but are quite happy to travel to any part of France.

Thanks in anticipation

While you will certainly find plenty of celebrations in Paris most French people seem to spend Christmas with the family, having a family meal together for example on Christmas Eve.

Réveillon can be celebrated in a restaurant, but I have found in the provinces anyway that you need to reserve in advance, and  not everywhere is open.

The 26th isn't normally a  holiday but sometimes falls on a Sunday which changes that a bit.

We spent Christmas a couple of years ago at a hotel in Nice. We had Christmas Day lunch at a restaurant over towards the Corniche, which was full of families and couples having Christmas lunch together. It was a comfortable rather than a smart place, and was a very pleasant occasion. It was booked ahead of time, as Norman says.
