Went for a stroll around Brantome today.

8C bright sun - swollen river.

What's flying over the river by the church skimming the water and catching flies... a bat?????

Watched the bat for over 5 mins - is this normal behaviour or just a hungry bat wearing sunglasses?

Funny coincidence, I just posted in Flying Taupe asking John about his bat or bats.

8 Celsius is reckoned to be about the minimum temperature for pipistrelle bats to come out and they will come out in daylight in winter, although bright sunlight is, I would have thought, rather unusual.

So, you're probably right, woke up hungry.

In parts of France with longer periods of milder weather in winter, notably Brittany most years, pipistelle bats can remain active throughout the year and are frequently observed on dull days. Here in Poitou-Charentes, I often see them before dusk in winter when the temperature permits.
