Gyro
I have my lunch by a small river and one day I went as normal. As I walked up I jumped back when saw what looked like a snake it was brown and quiet thick bodied. It seemed to fold itself and fall down towards the water, I didn't hear a splash so I can't be sure it went into the water.Do eels come out of the water on warm days? baypond
Unlikely to be an eel. They are primarily nocternal, and they would only normally venture out of the water when the ground was damp, and at night if at all. More likely a grass snake of some kind. Albert the InfoGipsy
I'm not familiar with all the species of snake in France, but 'brown and thick-bodied' sounds more like a viper than a grass snake to me. However, grass snakes are good swimmers -- dunno about vipers.Definitely doesn't sound like an eel, although they can cross grassland at a push. Gyro
When I say thick bodied I mean 50mm to 60 mm, also it didn't have a pattern just plain brown.Which is why I original thought it was an eel.

hakunamatata
Thanks again Chris I think my dog and I met the Montpellier snake the other morning. It certainly made lots of noise and was not at all happy to see us!
chris pp
Just remember not to put your fingers down its throat Margaret and everything will be fine. I wish we had them round here, beautiful creature.[:D]Chris
