Party invitations

I have been asked to design and print invitations (in English and French) for an early evening - say 6pm to 8pm - drinks and nibbles party to celebrate a 90th birthday.

French invitations we have had and seen use the expression "vin d'honneur" but have all been for morning or early afternoon events.  Would it be more correct on the French version of the invitations to say "aperitif" perhaps? 

Any advice welcome.

Vin d'honneur is for an official event such as wedding or baptism. It basically means come for a drink but don't stay for the meal.... In your case, aperitif would be the right choice of word.

Vous etes cordialement invites a vous joindre a nous de 18h00 a 20h00 pour aperitifs et amuses-bouches afin de celebrer les 90 ans de ABC.

Thank you Eric. We have gone with apéritifs and invitations are almost ready to send out.

Helpful to know exactly when to use vin d'honneur, the last one we saw was for a Golden Wedding "re-marriage" so it makes sense.
