Angela, Norman did explain to me years ago that these se verbs are used for the passive.  So, whilst it didn't crash itself, it has crashed? Perpetrator unknown?

What do you think of that explanation?

I don't know, mint.

It always makes me uncomfortable to read in newspaper reports that "la victime" (and I hate that "victime" is feminine) "s'est fait aggressée", as if they had asked for it.

I suppose that could bear out Norman's explanation, that the perpetrators were as yet unknown.
