5 fruit and veg a day....or not

Sometimes I'd love to be served vegetables just plain.  MIL is

particular prone to overcooking of veg which are lovely to start off

with.  She cooks carrots and peas and broadbeans together for

ages, puts sugar in and then serves them without draining the

water.  The soggy mess on the plate was probably quite nice about

30 minutes earlier, minus the sugar.

great emoticon  [:P]

I was just think about the French and their veg, and I remember when I

first moved here, how surprised I was that they don't always peel their

potatoes.  I guess when I go out people don't often serve me

potatoes but the other day I was at a friend's house and we were having

a raclette evening and my French friends were all saying to our host

how nice it was that she'd gone to the trouble of peeling the potatoes[*-)][:S][8-)]

Tourangelle, I like unpeeled potatoes (I never used to peel mine- partly laziness) My husband's grandmother always cooks potaoes in their skins and then everybody spends ten minutes scalding their fingers trying to peel them on their plates, while I've already started eating. They do seem to taste better cooked that way and they are less likely to be cooked to a mush.

I agree with the comment that french people probably get their vegetables/fruit from other things than the main course, there always seems to be some sort of crudité starter and fruit for pudding.

One of the villages near us is having a festival des soupes next week. maybe I'll find out what to do with all the vegetables then.
why on earth would they peel them??
Because you don't eat potato skins (shock! horror !etc) Not peeling them is for cooking, not for eating!

I'm not saying that no french person eats unpeeled potaoes but my in-laws were horrified to see me doing it (they still are but they're used to it now)
