Tony F Dordogne
I've been thinking of making some mosaics for the garden. Apart from the usual sources of tessari (like the bricos) does anybody know whether you can get specialist glass at the major arts and crafts sheds? Pads
Tony a friend of mine makes the most beutiful mosics and never pays a penny for her materials, but spends a lot of time in skips( for used tiles pieces of glass ect) and hunting the shore line for worn glass bits small pebbles, some times we find bits in old junk shops like old coins old tins toys, marbles, beads, ect. it is fasinating to watch her turn these bits of rubbish into beutiful pieces of art. So just look around you and see what treasures you may already have hanging around in the garden and shed and the countryside.Hope we get a preview of your first one on here[:)]
Clair
I used to imports bags of rejects from a manufacturer in the south of France to the UK.I still have loads of them in boxes in the cellar to use one day soon...This site offers a lot of choice, but I have never dealt with them, so this is simply for info...http://www.made-in-mosaic.fr/PBSCCatalog.asp?CatID=105843
Helen
That looks an interesting site Clair. Thankyou. I was going to say that I usually visit Mosaic workshop in Holloway when I'm in the UK. They have a website at http://www.mymosaicworkshop.co.uk/ .They send abroad but I delivery charges would be horrendous. Theres some useful info on the website though. Tony F Dordogne
Thanks for the responses, I'm investigating them further. I'm looking to make sort of formal celtic designs - knots, crosses etc - plus some ying/yangs or mandalas so some of the material looks as though it will fit the bill exactly. mossie
Also have a look at pebble mosaics. These look fantastic in gardens. The best known UK exponent is Maggie Howarth who has a website with some interesting stuff on it.
Helen
Maggy Howarth has also produced an inspiring book, The art of Pebble mosaics. Looking through it I read this note of caution.(Concerning knotwork) 'Look for simple ones: however gorgeous the examples you find, most will be too complicated to make unless the work is on a very large scale'As a result of this thread, I've spent this afternoon finishing a mosaic that I started over a year ago. Thankyou Tony.
