Is it just the good ol' brits that go in for these mad and eccentric sports?  I'm thinking of lawnmower racing, gurning and such like.

Personally I'd love to have a go at lawnmower racing - that sounds like great fun - I think our neighbours would certainly think we were barmy brits if we suggested it

Are there any funny French antics to be had in the country which would be good to either join in or view?

Hey, that's great Peter, where did you spot it?  It looks like a fun one to watch.

Hi

The photo was taken in Sete on july 14.

The jousting takes place along the Languedoc coast, and in a few other places in France.

Apparently, it appears on some Egyptian reliefs dating from 2500 BC, and was first recorded in France around 1270 AD during the crusades.

A map of where it takes place is here : http://www.joutes.com/geographie/europe.htm

and there is more info here : http://www.joutes.com/
Hey Peter, you forgot to mention that it's FREE!!!! We usually watch it in Frontignan, it's smaller than Sète, and easier to park in. OTOH, did you know that if it's your birthday, you can park fr...
I didn't have to park a car !

Quite spooky Trishaa. T'was only last night I was thinking of lawnmower racing as something to do in our field. If any one has hotrod mowers in Normandy let me know. I don't have one, but I do have a souped up strimmer.

Saw a French 'It's a knockout' the other night with games played involving being chased by a bull. Think it was transmitted live. That was wacky and great fun. If any one's got a bull...

That's what's worrying me Peter, I think I am that first and second person.  His wings flap for you but not for me, so is it my browser or something, like when you post a photo direct from your computer and you can see it but noone else can.  Your photos are very good by the way, you had a lovely one of a lavoir somewhere else.

Could someone else please say if the flamingo's wings are flapping?  I think I may have a "navigateur" problem.

Thanks, Christine

Yes Peter, his wings are flapping around for me   How do you add these onto your signature and where do you find them?

I had no idea that they also had bull rings in France, I thought it was only on the Spanish side that this occurred.  Do they kill the bull as well or is it just a 'chase me' sport? I do love the door and the wonderful thought of the cakes.

I recently bought old ten pins and bowling balls (on good old e-bay) plus a croquet set and I'm wondering if our neighbours will find them whacky - I'm far more interested in the unusual French interests than the very 'british' ones.

Hi

You add them to your signature using HTML (the image file must appear somewhere on the web). It looks like this :

<IMG src="http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/images/flamant.gif">

You can find images by keying "free animation gifs" into google, or make your own ( try here : http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/ .

Bonne chance

The one where they kill the bull does go on in France too, it's called the corrida.

What Peter has shown is the Course Camarguaise.  The bull has a little red cocarde on its forehead, hanging between its horns, and the young men (called raseteurs) have to get that off first, then try to get the pieces of string tied round the base of each horn.  They do it with sharp hooks.

There are of course rules, such as the bull has to be running after you when you get the string.  Leaning over the barrier and getting it from behind doesn't count!!   Great excitement is to be had when the raseteur leaps athletically to prevent being bull-horned up the bum.

Usually 6 bulls in each session, one at a time, 15 minutes each.

Price for the Real Thing is 10 euros per adult, set by the FFCC.  The ones with trainee raseteurs, or with young bulls with cups on their horns, are cheaper, or sometimes free.   The corridas I've seen have all been free, but you can pay a huge amount if it's a famous torero, or whatever they call them.

On the subject of weird and wacky sports and pastimes that Brits seem to indulge in :

If you possess a snorkel, wet suit (optional), are not afraid of dark dingy waters, nor afraid of looking like a stranded whale on a beach by the end of the race...

Well! you must enter the World Bog Snorkelling Championships held every year in Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales not far from Builth Wells...

Phheeww that a lots of well, whale, wells, Wales!!!!HAHA!!!

How do you get four elephants in a Mini?

Two in the front and two in the back.

How do you get three giraffes in a Mini?

You don't, it's already full of elephants.

How do you get two whales in a Mini?

Across the Severn Bridge.
