That is definitely a Mirabilis jalapa, as someone said sometimes called 4 o'clock plant or Marvel of Peru. It has a lovely scent and comes in yellow, pink, white and various blotchy versions of those colours. The black root is a tuber and overwinters like that. It is not reliably hardy but if planted deep enough will survive the winter or the seed may germinate the next year. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
