Dead computer DVD drive

Recommended Posts

Dear all 'n all

Hope you have a good Christmas and that you enjoy those days you have off. Its a good family time ...as long as they behave themselves...

The youngest has just reported that the DVD on his XP windows machine does not work?
If we go to explorer, the DVD drive is no longer there --??
(as Tommy Coooper would say -- "it all of a sudden happened ..just like that" ...no one knows nothing!

We looked at the configuration panel and it said that XP has disconnected the drive -- either because it does not work or there's a conflict..the panel shows three other progs with yellow triangles and an exclamation mark (??? what does that mean??) next to them (I uninstalled those programmes ....but they are still there in the config panel with the little symbol.

AND ...there's a red cross next to the DVD .... presumably this means there's a conflict??

We tried to reinstall the DVD...that did not work. I switched off and pulled out the strappy cable to the DVD, started up again and then switched off and then reconected the drive, and tried to reinstall (automatically looking for new hardware?), we get the same message unfortunately ....

So could it be the DVD has expired and should be replaced?
OR is there a conflict? if so how do I resolve it?

Any advice would be most gratefully recieved.

All good wishes for Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Sounds like he's either got a conflict with other hardware, he's installed the wrong (or bad) software, or the drive is dead.

In XP however a conflict should be reported - on the yellow icons - right click and go to properties, this should give you a message box with any conflicts or other reasons for why the drive won't work.

Try the same with the drive with a red x going through it, and see if that comes up with any reason for it's not working.

Has your son installed any hardware recently? - This may also explain the fact that it's not working. Also check the jumper settings on the back of the drive - the dvd should be set to slave if your installing it "under" a hard-drive (IE you have a hard drive and a dvd on the same IDE cable - the hdd nees to be set to master and put at the top of the cable, with the dvd under it)

Appologies for dodgy explanations - it's been a good couple of days ;)

The red cross simply means that the resource has been disconected (inhibited actually) either by instruction, or automatically by XP, as detailled above 'properties' should help you discover why. Try unticking the inhibit box.
