He was leader of the libs, and was accused of conspiring to have his homosexual lover murdered. There was something about the lover's dog being killed as well. AW is Auberon Waugh who helped expose the scandal in Private Eye. He stood as a kind of satirical candidate for the DLP against Jeremy Thorpe in 1979 election. It did exist after a fashion, but fielded a candidate only in one constituency in the 1979 general election.This is from Wikipedia:"Waugh was a candidate at the 1979 election, indulging another of his pet hates - former Liberal Leader Jeremy Thorpe, who was about to stand trial for conspiracy to murder arising out of a scandal that Waugh had helped expose.
