Thinking about getting a Camper Van

I’m considering purchasing a small camper van to allow me to travel round and see a bit more of France. Having never owned/driven a camper van before I have a few questions people may be able to provide advice on.

Looking small (VW micro-bus (?) sized but probably not the “classic” VW micro-bus). Me, couple of dogs, loo, fridge, some washing/cooking facilities – that sort of thing.

1. I’d be looking at the lower priced end of the 2nd hand market (higher mileage, older). Any particular makes/models to avoid or any particularly recommended ?

2. What sort of diesel consumption does one get out of such vehicles ?

3. I’ve been told that these vehicles tend to be insulated to make them better in the heat. Whilst I am always careful about dogs in cars, insulation could extend the times of year I could go travelling (due to temperatures and dogs in vehicle). Is this the case and does it have much effect ?

4. Any additional running costs above a normal car (e>g> additional certifications/inspections/etc. needed ?

5. Anything else I may have overlooked ?

Many thanks

I have a blockage in my mind....my Dad has had a van for years than we care to count (it is my inheritance, yippee).  Can't think of his magazines.  There is the Camping and Caravan Club with a site etc.  Have you tried google?  Try motor home in the search too.  Will ask him when I mail him.

I know it is a very personal thing, preference!  My brother has a massive new beauty but I think it is too big.  I prefer Dad's which is a Peugeot Talbot Turbo diesel....

They are expensive in France.   Anway, I will ask.

By the way, they normally have heating in.  Dad always had six months in Portugal in the winter.  If he comes here, he sleeps in the van in winter.

"Le Monde du Camping Car" is a very informative camping car magazine. The camping cars at the smaller end of the market are called fourgons in France.

Here are a few links which you may find useful:-

We sold our English camper before moving in 2000 and bought second hand in France last year.  We found plenty of choice and prices are reasonable. Performance and running costs will of course depend on the model you settle on - like anything else you get what you pay for.

Unlike cars camping cars require a control technique every year. They are classed as camions and the alternate year check is for exhaust emissions.

Good luck with your search

Chas
