C of C for camper van

A friend is going through the very long and painful experience of trying to get a C of Conformitie for his German bought Fiat based camper van, (so the he can register it in France).  After having to have a light installed in the step well, the cooking equipment stripped down and inspected, the tester then asked for the emergency light switch to be changed to red from green and told him he had to get a plate with the vehicles dimensions and weights fixed on the vehicle.

So we went to a plate maker and he provided a pre-printed adhesive transfer for commercial vehicles with the various weights,  unloaded, maximum etc on it, ready to be filed in  So my friend took this to the tester and showed him to see if this was what he wanted and he told him it had to be on a metal plate not affixed directly onto the vehicle,  AND that he wanted the towing weight, even though the van does not have a tow bar fitted

Now having looked at every commercial vehicle in town, we did not see any that did not have the weights etc painted straight onto the vehicle and I am now wondering if the tester is taking the urine.  Personally  I cannot see what the difference is in having the figures painted straight on the vehicle or painted on a plate.

If anyone out there KNOWS the rules and/or has been through a similar experience, please let us know what weights/ dimensions etc you had to provide and how they are displayed before a camper van ends up in the swimming pool or a Government official meets an untimely death

Ron. Our english friends here imported a German registered Seat Campervan two years ago, it is about ten years old and in marvellous condition. They did have some of the same problems and opted for the limited mileage insurance because they don't go far. They had to change the cooking facilities/gas etc and some other tiny niggles but no problems with paperwork, CT and DRIRE although the whole thing did cost them a few hundred pounds. As regards the weights and measures thing I don't remember seeing anything like this or hearing many tales of woe etc. Their son actually imports these into the UK for a living.

Hi Ron

We imported a HYMER/Citroen camper this year from Germany to France. It took us about 6 weeks and a few hundred euros to get it registered, but it was well worth it, given the difference in prices between France and Germany. We had to get a manufacturer's certificate of conformity from Hymer France and Citroen France (for the body and the vehicle). We then had to have it inspected by the Bureau de Veritas, and with very little in the way of changes it was passed. If you are having problems with your local DRIRE it may well be worth approaching your local Bureau veritas, as they seem to have the final word.

If you are still struggling PM us and we'll see if we can help.

Thank you to John and Angie and the previous poster (I cannot see your name as the author box has gone blank for some reason) for advice, it appears all is now sorted out at the DRIRE, they did have to have the towing weight on the vehicle but this and the other weights and dimensions did not have to be on a separate plate.

Thanks Again

This is not a comment, but a further question. We have a 1995 Fiat Ducatto campervan which we bought as a van in UK some years ago, and had it professionally converted in UK by a company which has since gone bust. It is still an all-metal body, unchanged, & exterior wise it looks like a van with windows.

It's still on UK registration here, with 365 day European ins cover from UK.

Do you think that this would get stuck in buraucracy trying to get it "conformed" here?

any thoughts would be appreciated, from those who have trodden a similar path...
