50% cheaper car insurance premium...!

My car insurance (Ford Focus 2.0 Ghia) was costing around €1300 / year (for fully comp) which was all the more annoying as I rarely used it. This was the best offer I could find at the time.

Anyway, I have been looking to change it and notice that a couple of companies do "low milage" offers, where you get reduced premiums if you do less than 7,000 or 8,000 KM a year.

I am pretty sure this is the case for me (I just use it for the occasional trip from paris to Britanny (3-4 times a year), and short-drives of a few miles maybe once a week).

With this, still at fully comp. insurance, the premiums drop to ;

€948 (AXA) < 8000 KM

€631 (AGF) < 7000 KM

AXA, seeing the AGF quote will get back to me to see if they can match this! (it pays to get a few quotes when looking around for insurance)

The only down side is that I need to take the car to a garage to get the KM checked once a year (with AGF, not AXA) - but certainly worth the trouble for the saving!

This is same practice as in the UK except they do not check the mileage. It is very important that you do not complete more miles than stated as the insurance would almost certainly be invalidated in event of a claim. Erring on the higher side of mileage may be prudent if in doubt.

I currently have six vehicles, (soon to be five) which includes two cars and four commercial vehicles, on the road all insured with AGF.

I had a low mileage policy on a spare Escort van I used and AGF insisted that it went to a dealer to have a compteur fitted. This was a small counter device in line with the speedo cable. It reduced the premium by half. I exceeded the limit by about 1000Km and they didn't seem too bothered and said there would be no extra charge and the vehicle was still insured.
