Second Hand Trailers and Registration

Any advice, I will be looking to buy a second hand trailer shortly and wondered if it is best to buy in UK and bring over, bearing in mind crossing costs. Or should I wait and buy in France, I have seen plenty for sale but have not checked prices. The trailer will be staying in France with us.

Also somebody told me that the trailer is supposed to be registered separately, in it's own rights, and that it it not considered as just an "extension" to your car. Is this true or were they getting me at it ??

It depends on what size of trailer you want and if you are going to tow it with a French registered car or not.

If you are towing with a UK reg. car then you would be able to tow up to the limits as you would in the UK without separate registration for the trailer (using the same reg as the towing vehicle).

If you tow with a French reg. car, then the trailer can not exceed 500 kg PTAC, unless the trailer has it's own registration number and Carte Grise.

It is also mentioned on French insurance policies the max weight trailer that you can tow.

If it's a plated one (BTW it's over 750kg gross weight for this)

Here is a direct quote from the "Code de la Route"

Les Papiers de la Remorque.

Jusqu a 500 kg PTAC aucun document spécial n’est requis.

Au- dessus de 500kg de PTAC, la remorque possède sa propre carte grise.

Thank you,

Just to be really stupid ... I intend to buy the trailer in France and start work on the house using an old Escort to drag everything around. I do not intend to register this car in France and will only keep it there for six months before disposing of it back in England. Longer term we will getting our Espace, and yes Motorhead I expect you are cringing at the thought of it, registered. So my question is, will a second hand trailer, bought  in France come with it's own plates and carte, and if so is it o.k. to pull this with the Escort in the meantime. Sorry to labour this, probably overly paranoid...

If it over the weight limit as posted above then yes, it should come registered,  if you buy second hand, you may have to change the Carte Grise to your name but I have no direct experience of this, you can of course just put the Escort reg. number on the rear of the trailer, UK Trailer UK car, no problem. At least in the short term.
