diesel engine problem

Hi all. A week ago my engine (1.6 Renault Kangoo diesel) decided to

suddenly not drive well up hills. Along with a lack of power there is a

distinct 'hissing' from the front of the car (it's like the air con is

coming on stronger as I accelerate). Does anyone have any idea what

this might be so I can go to the garage fore-armed with some knowledge?

"turbocharger wastegate actuator."....er is this for real? sorry but it sounds like something out of Thunderbirds!

I don't mean to be disbelieving, but could you explain it in even more

simple terms? I know an aircooled VW engine well, but anything else is

just beyond me. Thank you.

To trace vacuum leaks spray WD40 in the general direction of potential leaks while the engine is running, if the hissing stops and the engine speeds up and the exhaust turns white then you have found the leak.

My money is still on the wastegate actuator control plumbing as it gets very hot and degrades, sometimes collapsing under the vaccum being delivered to the actuator causing loss of turbo pressure whilst climbing hills etc, this fault took me 2 years to find on my old Seat Alhambra, "reputable garages" were useless as they just followed the fault code that said the actuator wasn't working properly, it wasn't but it was not faulty, it was misbehaving as the result of the fault that needed a human not computer diagnosis.

Your problem could equally be a leak on the pressure side of the turbo system but my money is on the above.
