buying a car in France

Does anyone have any tips for the car buying process in France. We plan to buy a new car and pay with a French cheque. The money is in our account so that's one problem solved!

Will we have to wait some time for delivery?

How can we find out what the correct price for the car should be?

Is there any point in shopping around or will all prices be the same for that car?

Do we need a French address and proof of residency to register the car?

Is it worth shopping around for insurance as in England or are they all much the same?

Suddenly it seems as if there's an awful lot I don't know!

It will depend on whether the dealer has the car in stock or not.  Specifying an uncommon model and/or extras may extend the delivery time

Ask the dealer for a retail price list or check the manufacturer's website. Most websites allow you to spec and price your individual choice of car online.

Same as in the UK, ask the dealer if he's prepared to offer a discount - then shop around.

Yes.  The dealer will ask you for copy of your passport and a utility bill, then he will arrange all the rest of the paperwork and register the car for you.

Same as in the UK - shop around for quotes.

Don't worry.  As you see, it's basically the same process as in the UK...
