Ballustrade spacing

We are almost there with our attic conversion!  Tomorrow we will need to put the ballustrade around the stairwell and are wondering how many to buy.  They are 45mm wide but is there a legal maximum distance between them or is it up to you?  We'll have to put them fairly close together as it will be a children's room and the whole point is to stop kids falling down the stairwell.  Any advice appreciated.

Coco, for what it's worth the max spacing in the UK is such that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through,ie effectively a clear space of just under 100mm.Unless French children's heads are smaller than in the UK,this should suffice and is what I would recommend for safety.

Thanks Tony.  That's good news, we were thinking it was around 60mm and at 13.90€ for two spindles it was going to be quite expensive.  That should reduce the amount we need by almost a third!

'Twould be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than to get a child's head through a 60mm gap. That's two and three eigths inches in old money.

Mind you, these days I wouldn't half like to give it a try..................
