whitey Posted June 19, 2007 Share Posted June 19, 2007 hi, i'm looking for some advice RE: good quality floor board stain and varnish.we've stripped back the old oak floor boards.......as best we can, given they are uneven but sound. has anyone got any advice on a hard wearing and good quality stain and varnish they may have used? it would be helpful if anyone could let me know which products to look out for.thanks for any help. mel. darnsarf Posted June 19, 2007 Share Posted June 19, 2007 Have you considered wax or oil rather than varnish? It seems a shame to varnish over lovely old oak. Our Architecte and neighbours were a tad horrified that the previous owner had varnished our stairs (thankfully leaving the rest of the flooring 'au nature'). Ford Anglia Posted June 19, 2007 Share Posted June 19, 2007 I got so much conflicting advice about this very subject, both on here and from actual wax/varnish companies, both those that made, and those that sold, that I eventually went to the guy who sold us our flooring in France. Ours is solid chestnut.We are using the stuff he recommended, he showed us several, but only recommended one, and it wasn't the dearest.It's a clear varnish that sets looking like it's been waxed. Chris Head Posted June 19, 2007 Share Posted June 19, 2007 Whitey...hard wax oil/huile cire...don't you dare put varnish on that lovely old timber...thin coats, wipe off excess after 20-30 minutes. 3 coats and cut the last coat back with wire wool. darnsarf Posted June 20, 2007 Share Posted June 20, 2007 As a matter of interest, do those 3-rotating brushes machines/polishers do the same jobish as the wire wool and are they any good for regular maintenance/polishing or do you get a guastly buildup of wax?
