Repointing terminology

Would like to have the cottage repointed but not to show all the stonework. Have seen a lot of houses which have just say 20% of stonework showing, almost like in between pointing and rendering. Any idea what this style might be called?

It seems to me, (someone will correct me if I'm wrong), that the style of pointing depends on the region the house is in, and the stones of which it is made.

In the Limousin, the style you describe seems the norm. It can be very attractive if done properly, but looks a mess if not.

I think FA is quite right. Here in 17 they tend to leave most of the stone face showing having been wire-brushed or sandblasted. A seam is then created around the edges of each stone. The whole effect looks almost like a giant patchwork quilt. The stone here is mainly limestone which when cleaned-up goes back to a creamy white colour.

I might be wrong, but I think the term for pierres apparentes (just a bit) is 'buttered' or Beurré.
