Slate Roofing Costs ?

Hi, has anyone recently had a quote for a new slate roof and could indicate how much we should expect to be paying per m2 ? I don't want to waste anyones time in calling round artisans to quote as I have no idea if we can afford it or not yet. We have around 90m2 of roof to do.

Apparently our rafters are Ok and fairly straight and our neighbour Henri (French), seems to think that we just need re- battening and slating . The existing slates are nailed to the roof and he says we need new slates and battens fixed with crochest ???

Any help much appreciated.

There are slates and there are slates.  Being Welsh I somewhat grew up with the concept.  Todays slate as in natural comes from normally Spain and should be differentiated from the fibrous slate which does not quite look the same.  Your neighbour is referring to the stainless steel hooks which hold all the slates together.  Also for that run of slate roof I suggest it could look like a jail unless the roofer puts some form of design in it.  We had in Normandie a huge gable end and the roofer really did a good job by incorporating some designs into the overall work.

Depends on the size and overlay of the slates, copper or stainless crochets and many other factors and doesn't include removing the existing but the price books indicate between 130 euros and 200 euros per sq.m.. (about 30% labour/70% materials).

Seems pricey for materials , I've just paid £30/sq.m for Brazilian (22 @ 250 x 500).

OK - I'll give you a rough price based on my roof. In 2005 I had a slate roof - 300 sq m replaced. Including removal of old slates and battens (removed from site), repair and replacement of some rotten roof timbers, removal of an old dormer which was rotten, felt, new battens, replacement of all guttering with zinc gutters and downpipes, stainless crochets, creation of 5 new dormer windows framed in substantial oak timbers the total cost was about £23k at the then rate of exchange which I recall was about 1.4/1.5 to the £ so around 30-32k Euros. I'm afraid I don't have the devis to hand so this is an estimate but won't be far out.

Against all good advice I only got 1 quote because this guy was praised to the heavens by all the neighbours and the Maire, I'd seen other work he'd done and it was around the price I expected.

This was by a registered French artisan in Normandy. The job was superb with patterned work and intricate zinc work on the dormers.

With hingsight I would have specified breathable felt and black painted crochets

We are also in 53, but husband did our new roof (58 sqM) himself from scratch and would just like to confirm Big Mac's qoute sems the same price range that ours cost us in summer 2007. We got our total costs including timer frame, battens, felt, crotchets and nails etc to £4200 (cannot put hand on original receipts at moment). Should point out he only did it himself because it was single storey! We used Riviere in Laval for our supplies and found them helpful and competitive.
