Not so long ago, when I posted a throwawy comment regarding liz Truss's performance as British PM, I was castigated, mocked, my very character and personality called into question.

Well, you will  know who you are so no need for me to name names😜

Schadenfreude?  Well, perhaps on this occasion, I will allow myself just a little!

    Did I miss something here?

When looking for a property many years ago the estate agent gave us two very good pieces of advice. 1. Think about when you want to buy a bag of sugar and 2. Never buy a house near a river!  Two absolutely priceless pieces of advice.

While I agree with the bag of sugar quote, we've lived quiet happily with 100ft of river bank at the end of our garden for 18 years. Each too his own I suppose.

I seem to remember that if it's valid UK licence and you apply to ANTS online to exchange it it for a french permis you will get in return an official document that confirms to the gendarmes or police that your licence is in the process of being exchanged and they are not to arrest you.

My wife received her letter yesterday, its in two parts, first one, you photo-copy your UK licence, both sides and attach the copies to the letter, this you keep to show the police if they ask for them. Second one, you send back along with your original UK licence. Its alleged you then wait a long time for your French permis. 😄

Yes and no - I bought our reserve winter stock of 40 litres of SP98 generator fuel this am at the retail minus €0.30 price.

But the same filling station had their gasoil price shown on the price board at the non- discounted price - I have no idea why!

We have just filled up with Diesel at 1.68 a litre at a Total garage on our way back from Le Mans, down the road in SuperU it was 1.98 I've been checking for heating oil a  we need to top up for the winter, but so far no drop in price since yesterday. Last time we filled up in October 2021 it was 1.105 a litre, at the minute they are quoting 1.60 a litre

  5. It does seem that in France you are more likely to be randomly breathalysed than the UK. In the UK you usually have to be committing a traffic offense , where as in France they can just stop anybody for no reason at all. I've been stopped and breathalysed in France 3 times, all negative.  I'm a bit paranoid about driving and drinking, in fact when we get invited to friends etc. for a BBQ or drinks, I always take a couple of my own non alcohol beers. P.S I've never been breathalysed in the UK.

  6. Everything has been terrible apart from black currants and red currants, no plumbs, Mirabelles, very few cherries, grapes are very small and looking a bit greyish. Cox apples are very small,  Bramleys  are smaller than usual and getting chewed to death by wasps etc. I've spent well on Coca-cola traps but although they are getting plenty of insects, it looks as though they can't keep up with the onslaught. Oh Toms and chillies are doing OK as they get watered, about the only thing that does as the well has dried up. No veggies at all this year ground is too hard to dig.

I think everyone who owned a house in France pre-brexit should be given a CDS to be fair. That is fair.

Those buying a second home after Brexit should have to jump through hoops.

Healthcare is your problem. France is on its knees healthcare wise (like the UK) so why should France have to look after the British. And the British tend to move to areas where there is limited healthcare which makes matters worse.

BTW....The amount of UK removal lorries I have seen on French roads this summer is unbelievable. Are they moving to or from France ?

For UK retirees like us with S1 forms the UK pays France for our health care. Friends of ours who are in the house selling market say lot's of Brits are moving back to the UK. All brits who owned houses or lived  in France pre-Brexit and take up residence get a CDS if they apply for one. Second home owners have no right to a CDS, they can stay longer than the 90/180 with a visa. Incidentally the ETIAS scheme for the Schengen area has been delayed till November 2023

  8. Bad wild-fire in Lavardin in the Loir et Cher 40 hectares burnt out, some people evacuated from their homes, fortunately nobody suffered any injuries or burns and no houses damaged. We are 6 or 7 kilometres from them and everywhere is like a tinder box. when I walk over what is left of the grass in our garden it crunches and sounds like walking on snow. Take care people .

Sounds terrible, but I'm glad you got compensation.

With all the horrible travel stories that make the headlines every single day, we've decided where ever we go next, it will be somewhere we can easily drive to.  And, it won't be until school starts again.

So sensible of you. Why oh why, do people rush on the first weekend of school holidays to head for the tunnel or Dover? OK this year was a little worse as the French border control were I think, playing games. What the French should realise is, that the holiday makers help pay their wages and help the French economy. Still it's madness to try to travel on these weekends.

Asking this question as there has been some activity on this thread.  Have a feeling of impending doom as far as this forum is concerned.  Is there a way we will know that management has lost interest totally supporting it and just shut it down?  It would be a shame if I could not say goodbye to everyone one.  The forum helped us a lot in the early days.

Is there a Facebook page, for example, where we could check in if the forum suddenly stops?

Sad to hear this, as I think a those of us who are left are fearing this could happen. Unfortunately, most of the older generation don't do Facebook. It would be a crying shame if this site did stop as over the years as you said, it has been very helpful and even great fun at times, e.g. Grumpy Norman in his barrel. So how about starting one Lehaut if the worst should happen, if you do I'd follow it. I hope that thought doesn't put you off. 😊☺️

I think the question I posed two months ago has been adequately answered by the responses, and the fact that posting on the forum has dropped close to zero.

Posts now seem to be only from the tolerant, the totally insensitive, and trolls.

Sounds like normal social media fare, the drop out could be for a variety of reasons. Are you setting up a list if so please inform us of our status according to you. 😃 😃

Never said it was right, how would I know. But Ipsos MORI is generally seen as a reputable source.

I asked for the source that supports the 99% claim, which you didn't provide.

Making unsubstantiated or spurious claims because you can't be arsed to find out or because a lie is more convenient than the truth, is so passé. Just ask Boris what happens when factchecking keeps proving you wrong.

You never asked me anything at all, so don't get all high and mighty with me. As to what Boris has got to do with it only you know, bless your little socialist cotton socks.

Citation from a reliable source, please?

    Cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_sexual_orientation#United_Kingdom

An Ipsos MORI survey on behalf of BBC[91] found that British people aged 16–22 (also called Generation Z) have lower odds to identify as exclusively straight (66%) than those who belong to the Millennial generation (71%), Generation X (85%), or Baby boomers (88%).

This was 2017, and if the figures have stayed on trend they will have shifted towards fewer exclusively straight since then.

Oh well if the BBC says so it must be right..😁

Pronouns! No not French ones but English!! I suppose though that the French will catch up!!!

As it appears impossible to start anything new on this site I must apologise for putting this 'new' subject on an old post.

Now I know I'm quite old fashioned in many ways. I have old fashioned views on everything ranging. from abortions, discipline, parents, this transgender/transition abomination, racism and now pronouns!! pronouns are difficult enough in French but I never thought I would be confused in English!!

I understand all these issues and , as I have said, have views on them but this pronoun one beats me; I just don't get it!!!! It seems that several companies or building societies have I.D. tags on their staff which have their name as well as His/her/ them etc. What I don't understand(or get!) is; are people supposed to call these people by their name or say "excuse me him"  or even say excuse Mr 'Smith him' or some other stupid term? Perhaps someone could explain to an old fashioned man?

Just ignore it, it's a load of cobblers invented by an hysterical minority trying to dictate to the majority.

Last week, travelling via the Tunnel, I had to go into the terminal building to show my Covid vaccination status, as I had failed to upload it when I booked.

Earlier in the month, catching, a Eurostar to Paris from London, I had to show my vaccination certificate, on my phone, to the French immigration people at St Pancras before being allowed to board.

so... you don’t have to have a TEST before travel, but do have to prove your vaccination status in some way. Best to upload it when making your booking.  I am assuming the ferries require the same procedure.

No uploading for the ferry apart from passenger information. Five weeks ago returning to France via the tunnel, We couldn't upload our vaccination status, so when we arrived at the check in a disembodied voice from the machine said: " you haven't uploaded your vaccination status", we explained why, the voice said: "ah OK, are you all vaccinated"? We said yes, the voice said "OK then procced through." No trip to the terminal building required. I think they make the rules up as they go along.  😂
