  1. We went to Nantes for lunch and a good window shop today .The tram  finished a stop away from the town centre and we had to walk .

The cross roads was choc a bloc with tractors and farmers with white hats having picnics in the middle of the road . Later at about 3.30 a march started past . a French bloke rushing past warned us to get out of the way as there were 3 Kilometres of marchers and Tractors on their way .

Being nosey we repaired to a Bar to watch. Amazing - !!  tractors 3 abreast chugged past from all over the vendee -some chucked straw off their trailers and  was set alight . Horns blowing ! noise- smoke -.

No police to be seen . We left to catch our tram at 5 and it was still in progress -

What was it in aid of??????   the whole of the centre of Nantes was cut off whilst we were there !!1

So anyone know Why so many farmers are protesting against Sarky ??

  2. Does anybody know how to make this properly ??? - I tried to do it last night and just bunged in everyting that came to hand .

    t

fortunatly folk seemed to like it - in fact some said it was the best they had had , but I would like to know how to make it properly .

I have looked form the reciepe but it doesnt help that I dont know what it is called !!!

  3. Further to washing hands  versus Gel - When I asked at the hospital "what had happened to the gel bottles " we were told that current thinking was dont use gel  but wash hands and Sing Happy Birthday through twice whilst doing it . We thought it more likely that because of the flu outbreak all the gel bottles had been nicked !!!!

  4. Update on this -

My daughter has just returned from a month at our place in the vendee and seemingly we dont have a problem anymore as she has spent most of it at least all the gold colour stuff .

Solution  -pay cash at supermarket and go through self pay -self serve checkout and pay by puttting lots of coins in their machine .

Seemingly in the Uk there are prototype machines being tested in some stores with a shute !!!! .

  5.  I thought it might be a toad -we have a lovely family of toads in our garden in the UK but Big Daddy is only ( legs tucked in ) 5 cms sq  whereas our one in France ( who looks like photo) is massive 8 cms sq . Also our UK ones are almost black  - the colour of bitter chocolate - they have been in our garden for 20 years at least.  I have been looking in the ref books I have in France ( UK ones )  but cant identify it . I wondered if they have cane toads in France ?.

  6. I had brother /sister kittens and the male bullied his sister so the next time I tried brother /brother  but they must have had different fathers ( maine coone and tiny) and one was twice the size of the other and bullied him almost into a nervous breakdown . But sadly when he was 2 the big one got IFA and had to be put down - he was my favorite cos he was so and stupid .  The little one then went from strenth to strenth  - confident and lovable and small and slim.  In fact the girlies at the vets hold him up as a model of what every cat should be like . ( this is in the UK where loads of cats are obese) .

I think as people say -give it a go - all cats are different   - also Ive just thought -on both occasions I was out at work all day so iIwasnt there to mediate .

  7. Hi      I  have the easi-yo yoghurt maker from Lakeland but I also got one from QVC.as sometimes their special offers are good  . It isnt electric - and doesnt use milk .  You make up the mix with water and put it in the maker in which you have put about a kettle full of boiling water and leave it overnight . You then have I litre of yoghurt in a pot that fits in the milk shelf of your fridge which i serve in ramikins . It last s my OH and I 4 days .    I have worked through all the types as I must have had mixed packs at some time .   My OH only really likes the Strawberry so I only get that one now.

We have one in france and one in uk and  we have it everyday for brekkie .  we used to have actimel drinking yog in little pots but now we dont litter the landfill with little pots so thats a result.

Sometimes I get the sachets from ideal world  ( simply yoghurt) but they are not so nice .

  8. Gluten free bread is expensive in the UK and up to last year at least hard to get in France

My friend used to get all herUK friends to bring her some back from the Uk when they visted her ( or anyone else)

When she went travelling ( or visiting ) she always took her own with her . She used to toast it but there is the problem of getting proper breadcrumbs on it .

When we went out to restaurants she either took her own or RICE CAKES which are gluten free

I suggest if you contact them youll say " you will be bring your own bread if you want it ???

  9. Thanks for the  tip about la poste  and leclerc -

Its funny but i did think leclecrc was  a likely contender - but searched amonst the photo boots to no avail - and have certainly never heard the distinctive clunking sound.  Do  they all have them  ? - we shop at Challon in the Vendee

I dont know where it all comes from -  but my purse is very small and I use my plastic a lot .

If I think about it I sometimes take a plastic bag of copper for the market ladies to have a rootle through when I go to the market or hand my purse over  - !  but our one will be back to twice a week when we get back .

  10. Thanks for the swift reply Claire .

I did search but despite being directed to some very interesting threads which took me  over an hour and 2 cups of tea !!to read unfortunatly they have absolutly nothing to do with my search !!!   But never mind I think Ive missed the sun in the garden now as i was going to have a sneaky sitdown with a good book .

  11. In our local Sainsburys back in the UK . There is a machine in the lobby that folk seem to chuck bags and bags of loose change in .   I think they get a voucher or something for the value ( less a small percentage) I expect.

My question is   Does any one know ifsuch a thing exsist in France  ???????????as I dont remember seeing one anywhere - and I have been looking out for one for over a year.

Ive got a pot of schrapnel on the bookcase (as have most of my friends)    and I feel guilty when I realise that loads of it is freshly minted and that there are those horrible open cast mines ( madigascar) for some reason springs to mind that can be seen from the moon ( alegedley )

Or!!!!!!  any one know of any charity boxes I can empty them into???? .    I cant say I have seen any of them around in France either.

In previous years Ive passed them on to a friend who has taken them to his church fellowship - but he is now perminantly back in th UK

Sorry to have gone on a bit  --------But i would really like to find a home for all the bits .

  12. We had a burger at McDo's on the way back from the Airport at la rochelle on the first July and the cost  hadnt changed . Yesterday the 2nd  July had Moules at our local Moulerie still no change to price .

Today 3rd we were having a Kir Cassis at our local Hyper U after the busy lunch time  ( well I was anyway ) and staff were rushing round changing prices and putting up big promotional notices - prices seem to have dropped by about a euro- well done Super U  ( not on my Kir though- shame )

  13. I must try genes reunited coops- Ive bookedmarked your suggestion RH  it looks just what we wanted -we havent come accoss a forum before

We are such novices -we have only been doing it for a few weeks but are completly hooked- you both seem to have gone back a long way so must have been doing it for ages.

We have been to Kew a couple of times - what a place!!!!!!!  Took a flask and sandwiches - free to park - free entrance !

  14. thanks all for looking at your gazettears  , Hereford yours sounds amazing   especially as the ref comes from the 1871 census.

thanks for the links RH  - I better not start looking now as we have been out all day visiting Son etc and I am sooooooooooo behind with packing and stuff but I have put in favorites!!!!

Its very strange - the entry has been transcribed - but it is so clear- and \I cant think what else it could be-   I cant find so far any other entry for her until 40 years later in the 1911 one which is a copy of the householders original handwritten  form and guess what ???   Place of birth is now London Holborn !!!!!!!

I could never have believed how enthralling searching is . But silly me - I waited until every last  one was dead before I started and most people lasted until their 90's or 100's .

Thanks again folks for your help.

    K

  15. Can anyone help ?   please

I am delving into my family tree and have just noticed in the 1871 census that my grandmothers place of birth is GT BLINSLEY.  All her brother and sisters come from Islington London and that is where they all lived .

I have googled without success .

I know this does not appear at first glance  to be french orientated - But - We are booked to return to France on Tuesday for a few months and until I can find this out I cant relax and do any packing and stuff

     Please help me

    Thanks .

  16. Clair

Next time I will cook it straight from Bread-maker . I'm still in UK and I have to confess I love the sliced stuff  we can buy here but not in  France , so until we are back 3-4 weeks time  there isn't a really urgent need .

Baguettes have wrecked mine & OH 's teeth so we cant cope with them anymore ( baguettes not teeth!!).

If you get a chance to buy a shallow pan, do, as its so good for potatoes - jacket, roasties, sliced dauphinoise etc etc . I never use it for pizza's as in standard pan they are too big.

  17. Clair

Your bread looks great !     I did rolls  and it wasn't a great success .  It all got eaten though.

    Goose

I have a standard remoska and have bought an extra shallow pan which we use all the time for baked potatoes etc  I would defo recommend you getting  one as well.  I also bought a rack which we rarely use -

so that   was a waste of money. The new cookbook is much better laid out than the old one and has some good ideas in it that you wouldn't maybe have thought of doing . As my one moves  between UK and France I haven't changed the plug but put a converter on it .

    Cheers
