  1. thanks for the replies so far, i was planning to use a beton fosse so would sit no probs in the bank. the degreaser would be right next to the house yes. but realy need my other answers answered, thanks so far tho!
  2. My house is on a slope, also the garden that runs away from the house, I have been told that the drain field needs to be on the same level as the outlet of the fosse? I planned to dig the fosse into the slope near the house then run the outlet downhill 8 meters to a level area and install the drain field? The other option is to run a outlet pipe down the steep hill to the fosse and drain field which would be about 15 meters away from the house? Can anyone tell me which (if any) would be acceptable?
  3. we are planning to replace our old wood burning range oven with a more upto date version with a back boiler,  so instead of stoking a wooburning fire we stoke a woodburning cooker/oven which heats the room, 6 radiators and the hot water!   and with not a elec switch thrown!  we have a gas cooker should we need a quick fix but it seems obvious that our planned system will be a great saving! summers we will use the gas cooker and BBQ and hot water by elec but the tanks here are so efficient it costs pennies.
  4. hello all. does anyone here run heating radiators off their woodburners?   i have been looking at UK websites and they have burners with back boilers wich will run up to 8 radiators! this must be the best use of a burner, like a turbo on a car, use the exhausted heat to reheat other parts of the house!  win win surely?   im thinking would the system need a pump or would the heated fluid move using thermo syphon action? and would that travel up stairs??   thanks

  6. i must apoligise now all.  SORRY.......... but, yes theres always a but, i have just done 3 operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan,  yes i know, i chose this life but then hey! so did you! ive given 23 years to my proffesion and country and now its time to gear down! ive just bought a place in France and could do with the extra income from Gites, even if it does mean some work! belive me if its just making beds, ironing, cleaning sweaty stained sheets and saying hello good bye once a week then bring it on!!  id rather do that and all the stuff you do than picking up body parts of my friends and nearly loosing my bits too many times also!! Dont get me wrong this isnt about me, ive seen so much poverty and cruelty as well and i know im so very fortunate to have what i have!  but then so should you!!!  when im doing peace keeping work abroad i feel sick with guilt when i see how little some have and how so much I and others more fortunate have!! Honestly when i see and hear people moan about pure triva i just have to comment. My travels have certianly changed my outlook on life, im not as selfish as i was and i try to help where i can. and hey it makes you feel good about yourself!! i have a suggestion, go employ some poorer people near you to clean sheets, make beds etc, give something back more than just taxes. and hey youll even get tax relief on their wages!!
  7. it may not mention weigh but your licence sure does, each licence catagory has its own restrictions, of which i have all, i even cat H as i also drive tracked 30 ton vehicles.
  8. Width - 2.55m Length - 12.0m excluding towing hitch is the maximum dimensions for a trailer over 3500kgs,  and would require a C+E licence not B+E an example of this is a 40ft artic? trailers under 3500kgs dont attract restrictions as there not heavy enough to be big.
  9. Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997 If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you're generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750 kgs MAM. Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997 If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750 kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.  You'll need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
  10. racking my brains and looking it up in my examiners handbook (im a military driving examiner) its not to do with dimensions unless you exceed 3500kgs,  however in the UK any trailer under 3500kgs  (laden weight) is not regulated by any restrictions or laws.  also their is no minimums for the towing vehicle.
  11. who would you have to register it with? and is that only if you have a french registerd car towing it?   i ask as i have a 4 x 1.8m box trailer in the UK and am not aware i need to register it?
  12. you can always use oak lintels inside and out then shutter and pour a concreet lintel to hold the weight. but my advice is if your clueless better go get a builder to assist you mate or you may end up with a pile of stones.
  13. thanks for the advice,   what about crushed stone suitable for sub bases for drive ways and then gravel,  does anyone have a steer on prices??
  14. sorry to be a pain,  but ive bought a secondhand skr reciver and have no dish or LNB, i thought all i would need to do is buy a dish and that LNB thingy would be on it? do i need to mix and match? sorry im being blonde!  anyone have a link to exactly what i need to buy?  help im a techno phobe!! sorry agian,
  15. hello, can anyone tell me what Satellite dish i need to buy to recive the UK channels using a UK sky box? i dont think the tiny ones will work will they? in the Nontron area.
  16. im trying to get a feel for the price of stone used for building additional walls at my home and will also use the same stone for various garden walls, my house isnt built out of lovely dressed stone but i would guess a cheaper more working class stone!! and using infill methods. also i have some new openings to make for doors and windows and am wondering how much the edging square stone blocks are? so my question is how much (ish) are both stone types? im in the nontron area if theres a diffrence in regional stone. cheers!
  17. Thanks for the advice, but can you tell me exactly what the  tableau to the earth bar is?  i was just going to earth it to the rest of the plumbing which itself is earthed, there are two terminal connectors that go through a small box then run onto the bottom of the tank, and also out of the small box is a metal strip which is bolted to the main tank which i presumed is where i take the earth from? i have a good clear picture but cant seem to paste it into this thread? thanks again peeps, lee
  18. Instant Ban if your above any speed limit by 50 KPH also with a 750 Euro on the spot fine which if not paid you dont get the car back even if you have a spare driver in the car with BOTH parts of his driving licence.
  19. im sorry as im sure this may have been coverd before but i cant find it. i have a 200Li elec water boiler that i want to install, easy in UK 35amp hook up and hot cold in and out,  In France am i right in saying i need to fit a restrictor valve on the cold intake? and is it a 35amp hook up also which just attaches to the two screw connectors (live & neutral to either connector)?  and are there any other funnies?  earth? or is it as simple as i hope it will be? thankyou
  20. LMAO!!   Alan Lesson No 23 made me chuckle!!  lol
  21. before i joined the Army i used to be a Butcher boy in a traditional highstreet butchers shop,  we had two large blocks and at the end of each day we would sprinkle baged saw dust over them and then with a very heavy duty wire brush (not wires but flat steel scrapers) and scrub like mad with lashings of sawdust untill it had taken a layer off and was white once again,  then wipe down with detergent.  the block tends to take its own shape which is never flat.
  22. Thanks for the apology much Appreciated maybe i judged you to quick. [kiss]
  23. oh my god! please read the threads of this topic carefully and explain when and how i have managed to receive this attack from yourself? i asked for answers to my question, very simple but you seem to write excuses and wont except debate without being abrubt, i understand the Antique market and again i say they are not selling ANTIQUES but worn out run of the mill goods! and its these ive been commenting on! maybe im reading your threads wrong , i just wanted advice and debate but your replies seem hostile and very defensive, you obviously take things personally. well done for all you accolades’ you must be quite well off, and im sure your a wealth of knowledge, I bow down.
  24. Russethouse please i dont intend to rival your 9000 odd posts but when you walk into a old converted hall/barn full of items from house clearances which are clearly not antiques but just damaged, unatractive or worn out items which would possibly restore but in the UK would be bric a brac!!! plain and simple which you dont need to be an expert on!,  and yes these places are called Brocontes? Please there are reems of second hand white shops in the UK, i was chatting to one such shop owner the other day. nearly every high street has one. i didnt want to get on my soap box or argue i just wanted a viable answer as to why?  please dont answer if you have'nt one. please.  what is it with some on this forum?
  25. im sorry i just cant swallow that, im sure the brocontes cant have many local middle class customers, i have done a comparison between them and traders selling brand new items and i must say there very little difference in price, in the UK if you go to a second hand shop/ flea market you are looking at a great saving compared with purchasing new items. a friend of mine who has been in France for quite some years told me its remarkable how the second hand market and goods do hold their prices. so again my question is.... why are second hand goods so expensive?? it was the case 5 years ago you could pick up lots of bargains. most are not antique shops they are selling items from clearances and old white goods! variables? I dont think so, if you buy a sofa for 200 Euro which is worn musty and stained you don’t go pricing along with new goods at 500-800 Euros? its astonishing! trade 1o1, that’s why chic arty farty shops in the UK go out of business, they out price themselves and go belly up! even more so now with a huge recession cloud over Europe i dont mean to dissagree with you Russethouse but im looking for a reason why? someone must have a clue? maybe im looking in the wrong place? i dont know? this is why im asking.
