  1. 'it's not true that the distance changes from commune to commune, there is a national law on this which was explained in full in a French gardening magazine, complete with diagrams, earlier this year.I've got it as a .pdf file and if you email me privately, I'll send you a copy as I've done to several other people on here'.

    Hello Tony,

Do you still have the article?

    Thanks Chris
  2. Thanks Andyh4,

Blimey the thought of putting acetone or nail varnish remover on a cat - just the smell of it is enough to make me feel sick!

I am collecting quite a shopping list from these posts but we are 'anglaise' and love our animals and doing the best for our cat is top priority.

Thanks to you all for your replies, Chris

  3. [quote user="Merlin"]Don't use matches!!!  Just not necessary and so very dangerous.  The plastic tick removers you can buy in the pharmacies or pet shops are easy, safe and quick to use - follow the instructions - very little else will persuade the little so-and-sos to release their jaws and be pulled away in tact.  I have tried other ways and the tire tics work by far the best.  After you get the blighter off it is useful to dab the area with some tea tree oil as it disinfects and soothes and also can act as a repellant without harming the cat even if it licks the fur.

Thanks Merlin, I will abandon the matches idea - didn't feel very confident about that approach anyway and will get some tick tree oil or should that be tea tree - talking of which I shall now go and put the kettle on.

  4. Thanks Suninfrance, I didn't realise they dropped off when they reached certain proportions! I really don't know how we missed this one as the two of us are always stroking, playing with her and she was on my knee being 'fiddled with' as the OH calls it for a couple of hours last night whilst I watched Foyle's War! I will also get a cat comb sounds a very sensible idea.

  5. Our young cat arrived this morning with a massive tick just behind her ear! Having read the posts here me and the OH armed ourselves with tweezers, very hot salt water and matches. The OH held her but when it came to lighting and applying the match I chickened out so dabbed the tick with the salt water and then quickly pulled the thing out with the tweezers. I've never seen one before but pleased to say as I dropped it in the bowl it was complete with head - yuk. Next time I will control myself and use the match! Sorry but I'm one of those squemish femails! very grateful for the info and am off to buy a Tom-O-Tick for future use!

  6. Hi Vissac

We had exactly the same thing, fake chimney breast and very old insert which wasn't actually inserted just sat on the hearth. We took it out ourselves, had someone come and fit a new liner in the chimney and installed a new woodburning stove. The only difficulty came when trying to insert the new stainless steel liner as the existing terracotta chimney piping when installed had a slight kink in it. Fortunately we had gone for top quality liner which is quite heavy duty and with some push me pull me force and a man on the roof and man on the hearth, we got it through without damaging it, a lighter weight liner may have torn.

  7. Hi Lebono,

I'm not sure what type of mobile home you are looking for, how much, or where but have a look at the Parc Mayenne website. I think the annual maintenance costs are quite high but then it depends as I said on what you are looking for. Also, it is not too far too drive from the ports or the airports. I have no association with this parc and do not know who the owners are so this is not an advertisement but it may give you some ideas.

  8. I also use mascapone but I think the 'Galbani' italian brand has a better taste than the supermarkets own brands. I mix it using e.leclerc's own brand Delisse creme liquid epaisse that comes in little boxes (3 boxes to a pack). Add a little sugar et voila!

  9. Thanks Albert, I thought that's what it was was saying but am never convinced about my french translations. I will pop into the pharmacy as you say just to be sure.

  10. Hi all,

'Carte a mettre a jour de preference a partir du 28/02/10 ou en cas de changement de situation'.

Could some kind person please tell me what the above sentence actually means. My new photo cv was attached to the above letter but since then I have come off my E106 am in the system and have registered the same cv card with the local pharmacy last december as instructed by a later letter. Do I need to renew this card at the pharmacy now?

    Thanks, a confused Chris
  11. Oh yes, we knew that our garage had been built and was complete with doors as asked for in the devis but not until we arrived did we find we had no door handle or lock but worse still there was no way we could get our car into the garage as we hadn't asked for a incline in order to get the car into the garage therefore we didn't get one so when we and the removal men arrived we had a bit of a giggle! If I knew how I would have attached the photo!

  12. If you go to Mayenne you can have a cheap lunch at Hyper U but get there for 12:00 as there is always a long queue unless you order at the bar where you can get a pizza, croque monsier and frites.

But, there is also Delice de Chine where you can get a lovely chinese meal at lunchtime during the week for E9,90 eat as much as you want - excellent value.

Jo, do you 'wish you were here'? Mind you, you have the sun and warmth while we shiver.....brrrrrr so perhaps we wish we were there!
  13. Hi Fonclaireau

Flers is not too far from you where there is a large zone artisanale and some of the bathroom/kitchen shops there have a good selection of tiles. If you want to go as far as Laval, Leroy Merlin have a very good selection and if you are not looking to break the budget have a look in the Bricomarche and Mr Bricolage at Ferte Mace, you could then have lunch in E'Leclerc (gives you some idea what we get up to!) or for a really good lunch try O Gayot in Bagnoles de l'orne.

  14. [quote user="Will"]You might also like to look at www.epiceriebarenton.com. A lot of this is high-quality British-style food that is made in France, from French raw materials, and supplied to French shops; the rest is imported.

We live in an area where our local Intermarche and Shopi stock Barenton's goodies can recommend them as sometimes you just have to have a bacon sarnie.

  15. I bought his book c'est un folie a couple of years ago, I didn't enjoy it and didn't read it to the end as I got bored with it, mind you I have bought a couple of other books along the same lines and I think once you've read one you've (give or take) read them all. That said we still watch A Year in Provence from time to time as we still love it even if it has been around for donkey's years!

  16. Glyn,

I do not need to read the small print as I quite understand having spent most of my working life working for one of these institutions however, what you say applies to any bank/building society mainland or offshore if the worst happens, but fortunately many people prefer to keep their money with one of these institutions rather than under the bed where there is no 'interest' to be gained whatsoever.

  17. We've got a shower bath with glass screen and we also went for this option in the UK. You can get a short version shower bath or the standard length. One end of the bath is rounded so you have plenty of room for swinging your arms around your head etc ! Suits us very well as we like showers but when you have the occasional bad back a bath is very soothing.
