1. I took a photo of my french neighbour Alain tiling his roof. After I printed it off I just happened to say to my OH nice a**e. He nipped round with the photo and told him what I'd said which had him and his daughter in hysterics. Alain told him to tell me that I should have said 'popotin agreable'! that sounds a lot nicer don't you think?

2. The house is already fitted with electric ceramic heaters. I am now converting the loft and want to put one/two heaters up there but due to the logistics, do not want to put in a spur solely for the heaters. I have therefore been looking at wall mounted heaters that are designed to be plugged in. There are quite a few on the market but it occurs to me is there any reason why I can't buy the heaters sold by bricomarche and attach a plug to them and plug into a normal socket. Is there a difference. Any advice would be very welcome.

3. Thanks for the info C, I will also send in copies of our return.

I quite agree that after 5 years you shouldn't have to keep providing bills for proof but I suppose it keeps someone in a job and as long as it turns out ok in the end I'm happy.

Thanks again, Chris
4. Just to let you know that I sent an email to our local tax office and the response was as follows:

Madame, Monsieur,

Suite à votre message du 31/08/2010, je vous informe que votre avis d'imposition vous parviendra fin septembre début octobre, la date limite de paiement étant fixée au 15/11/2010. Le montant à payer est de ***euros

So at least we know why we haven't had the bill yet. I will print off the email to send with the other docs required by CMU and hope they will accept this.

5. Will, I do hope we are not about to be investigated but we do have all our returns neatly filed by year!

Fortunately, our affairs are very very simple ie just pension and investment interest and we also emailed our local office asking what conversion rate to use (and of course have a copy of the emails) so hopefully they are being slow. I should add we do everything by the book always have even in england as we want a quiet life!

6. thanks for the link C and I have made a note on how to get to this result for when I try again tomorrow!

I have followed your instructions which are very clear but can only obtain the year 2009 tax paid for 2008. 2010 is not a option so I can only presume they haven't done it yet. I know they have received the forms as I took them in to the office myself.

Thanks again and to everyone for their replies and especially Will - you have now scared the c***p out of me!

7. Has anyone in the Mayenne department not yet received their tax bill for 2009. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive and wondering whether to contact the office as I have sent the tax bill along with the rest of the documents to the CMU office before 15 Sept. I don't do my tax on line but am I able to view my bill on line?

Thanks, Chris
8. Hi, we opened an account with CA Britline 7 years ago and received a lot of helpful advice from them so much so that when we moved to France permanently we transferred the britline account to our local CA bank. We understood there was a charge for closing the account of around 70 euros so left that amount in the account but found to our surprise that they transferred the balance and there were no charges to pay. I know there are a lot of folks on this forum who wouldn't recommend CA but we have had no problems whatsoever, they even arranged for an english speaking person from another branch to talk us through accounts/assurance etc as our french skills weren't up to much at the time!

Regards, Chris
9. Thanks juswundrin, I have just spent an age going through the card T&Cs and found the info.

As it's monthly pension that would be loaded onto the card it seems that it's best to get in on and off the card as quickly as possible just in case! ie 'If you choose to hold a balance of more than £1000 on your MasterCard® Prepaid Card you understand and accept the risks of holding this large amount of money and specifically that you may lose your e-money if Newcastle Building Society becomes insolvent and that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme does not apply to your MasterCard® Prepaid Card'.

I think I should rename myself to 'JIC' just in case Chris!
10. I was going to go down the route of Fair FX when it becomes available later this year for customers with an address outside of the UK then someone told me that as it's a pre paid money card if you mislay/lose the card you lose the money that's on it and can't reclaim it. Not that I'm in he habit of losing things but it worries me a tad just in case. If anyone can confirm that this is true I would be grateful as I haven't yet checked it out on their website.

11. Hi

If you like roses, have a look at www.davidaustinroses.co.uk and the variety hyde hall as it may be ideal for you.

I buy all my roses from DA and can well recommend them. If you order a brochure and prefer an english version you will have to order it via the phone as they automatically send out a french version if you give them a french address. They deliver to france but there is postage to pay.

Hope this is of help. Chris
12. Received my letter today if anyone is interested pm me and I'll scan a copy over but basically saying:

'over time we have found it has provided a huge benefit to a tiny minority of our current account members such as regular business travellers. At the same time it has benefitted others by only a modest amount and it has not benefitted the majority of our current account members at all. It is simply not an equitable way to share member value' etc etc.

13. Chancer,

I too have done very well out of them for the last 6 years. I have always had my salary/pension paid into the flex account long before it was obligatory and I also have savings with them and with NW International. Over the years I have had dreadful customer service but have put up with it due to the free withdrawals but now I am going to have to pay for the dreadful service - not on your nelly!
14.
Just come across this thread.

I was having a really good day up until then!

Well, Nationwide is our main bank.

We spend possibly 10 months a year in the eurozone.

We will be 65 in a couple of years.

We are French resident.

This means we won't have the advantage of free travel insurance but will be clobbered for charges when withdrawing our cash.

Would it really be too complicated for them to differentiate between those of us who pay in their salaries/pensions and those who just use the account for foreign travel benefits?

I'm going to write to them NOW and complain.

(using the online messaging facility - suggest you all do that too - swamp their website)
Totally agree with your comments bubbles and I made my complaint this morning.

From 1st November '10. This is Money website is suggesting Caxtonfx or Fairfx and you can get a free card via this website with Fairfx however, it is of no use at the moment if you don't have a UK address (which I don't have) although it does say they will be open to international customers shortly (I do hope so!).

16. I'm one of those many stories that was trying to get a C de S. On my behalf the Maire rang the Prefecture only to be told they do not issue them anymore. The Maire went on to explain that I'd applied to a particular french bank to open an account but as I didn't have a driving licence because I don't drive, my only source of identity was my passport and that the bank wouldn't accept my application without another source of ID ie C de S, or Titre de Famille. As I don't have any family the T de F was not an option. The Prefecture then said what about a carte d'identity anglaise - we don't have such a thing I replied. The Prefecture then told the Maire that it was not necessary to have a C de S to open a french bank account. The Maire then rang the bank telling them the C de S was not necessary and after 20 minutes it was agreed I could send a copy of my marriage certificate as ID. Just to be sure I also sent a copy of my birth certificate as more proof as to who I am and a couple of weeks later the account was opened. What a performance in order to put some savings in a bank account!
