Thanks Guardian. Feel more confident now of taking some old folks there in Nov and the fact that you mention eating in a restaurant outside indicates that not everything will be shut though I know 'le petit train' won't be working in Avignon which is a shame. I suppose the larger towns keep 'open' after the April-Oct season has finished.

Hi
I'm wondering if someone can tell me what the weather is likely to be like in mid November in the above area. I have been around there before in mid October which was very wet, windy and a bit cold but the tourism offices assure me that 'everything is still open' and the weather is better in November than in October!! I have been out of season before to some places and found them like ghost towns so I wonder if the above towns are the same. Further south in Cannes/Nice and Monte Carlo, I assume they would be 'all-year round' (?) but I'm just not sure about the above places inland.
Thanks in advance

Am also very interested in responses to this thread. As you say, not something we want to think of but good to be aware of the options.

Tks for site. It looks full of the sort of info. I was looking for. I am going to go through it in more depth.

Thanks to all for replies. Am going to follow up on suggestions. I didn't know about exhibition - pity, because I was in Bordeaux a lot last year but not actively looking at that time - will certainly make a point of going there next time.

Does anyone have any information and experience, incl pitfalls, of building a house in wood and any recommendations for construction companies or how I could find out more about it?
They look great from the outside but I wonder what sort of problems one might experience and if they are durable.
I am looking initially around the Bordeaux area or a bit further north but may yet go elsewhere.
Thanks

I am very interested in the info regarding villages such as this as I am also going to start looking around and need to find somewhere with transport and other facilities in order to be reasonably independent as a retired lady on her own.
Like you, I have visited some delightful places but would be marooned if either the car wouldn't start or, in years to come, I wasn't able to drive. I look forward to reading about other such places that I can put on my 'list' to investigate in due course.

I'm interested in coming in on this point on asking for info. I am asked for this info regularly when I travel in France at various Kyriad, Campanile and Logis hotels. I was told the fiche had to be handed to the police and the one particular Kyriad must have any number of copies of my passport! I have protested the point several times with the GM and he said it was a legal requirement for them. I travel on a normal British (EU) passport.
From what you say, I can legitimately refuse to give the info? They would probably say they use the passport as an ID document since Brits don't have one. I always pay cash so it's not as if they need to verify a credit card name.

Ah, understand it now! I couldn't work out how anyone would pm me if I had no button. I absolutely didn't know that it was visible to the rest of you - thanks so much for explaining that! Not quite at the stage where I send myself messages ...

Can someone please tell me why my posting has no pm button on for people to pm me? All other postings seem to appear with the button.
Thanks

Have just seen this section so am repeating my post from other section.
Having just suffered a bereavement, I need to get away for a few days over Christmas, probably about 22-26 Dec within a day's drive of Dunkirk. Preferably self-contained accomm with French TV with access to somewhere local I can get a meal with some local activity/distraction. Mature lady, non smoker. Must be warm, Internet access. PM or email me with any suggestions.

Not sure where to put this request. Apologies if this is the wrong section.

Thanks Pickles. I had no idea of the 'dependant' relief and this obviously gives another angle to the equation which I need to investigate in more depth.
I will look at the on-line manual again and see if I can sort out the answers before I come up with more questions ...

Sorry to raise this, especially after having found very detailed info in the archives (thanks) but I am still trying to get my head round the CGT. I have also been into the HM site but am still confused.
My house in the UK was purchased in 1971 but am not in a position to sell the house at this stage as 2 elderly relatives live with me.
If I buy a small place in France to retire to now (and make it my principal residence with tax residence), I assume that when I sell the UK place I will pay a huge amount of CGT to both (?) UK and France. Does anyone know what % this might be? Pickles mentioned that the calculation was complicated if the house was purchased before 1998. Obviously the capital appreciation from 1971 to 2007 is high!
I presume the alternative is to buy a place in France but keep UK as my principal and tax residence, then would I pay no CGT (?) when I sell the UK place? This really means I can't 'retire' to France yet but it might be the only answer.
Any help to straighten my head would be appreciated.
