  1. I have a normal Lenovo laptop in English.

I need to write letters in French quite often.

Can I just plug a French azerty keyboard into a USB slot?

I imagine I would have to change the 'language' from English to French, but is that enough?

I asked the man in the IT department in Leclerc and he said it 'probably should work'!

I wonder if I have to put in another program?

I know I can put the ALT codes on how to accent letters, etc. but I want something a bit faster,

    Would appreciate any advice.

  2. We also went to the Tax Office to query the social charges, with all the documentation and typed specimen letter. Our Tax person wasn't as accommodating as yours. She said we had to put in an official letter which would have to go to 'the Direction' and as well as the S1's and the avis plus the other justificatif , we also had to append our Attestations to the CPAM which were the original confirmations before receipt of the Carte Vitales. I'm not sure what the attestations tell them as I can't see anything on them which says we are not affiliated to the French system. Anyway, we have now sent off the payment and will look forward to a refund!

  3. I thought I saw a post on this but now can't find it. Having just received the avis, they have charged us on UK investment income and I thought I saw a sample reclaim letter saying that under the S1 we are not liable (?) for social charges on investment income.

I thought I read that someone had claimed a test case and won. Is this right? If so, does anyone have a copy of the sample letter, please?

    Thanks

  4. Thanks Norman - yes, just seen the link. Very reassuring. We did think Baclesse was excellent and our drivers (ambulanciers) all spoke very highly of it. We did think we were very lucky to be in a place where we could get bon de transport to such a hospital and then have treatment which seemed so thorough and caring. Even though the journey was quite long, every day, it was worth it and getting the transport made a huge difference, physically and mentally.

  5. Thanks Jonzjob. Will look on Amazon.

Am interested in the cancer hospital mentioned.

My OH went to Baclesse in Caen which we were told was one of the 10 cancer hospitals in France. I wonder how that rates with the one you mention.

It's just interesting to read of different places, and their standing in different cancers, in case the need arises in the future.

  6. Hi

My OH was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thanks for the link for PomiT. Have read several times about turmeric in particular.

Can you tell me where you get the tabs? Are they available in France under that name or do you send away for them?

  7. Yes, agree, photocopy several copies and keep somewhere safe.

The CPAM took both originals from DWP, one of which they sent back to the UK.

I thought I would be able to keep one of the 'originals' but they said not so I asked if they would stamp and sign one of my photocopies as a 'true copy of original' and they were quite happy to do that. I didn't want to risk them losing both originals.

From previous experiences, I actually took everything I could think of: passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, husband's death certificate, proof of residence. I can't remember what they actually photocopied.

It took about 3 months in all. I went in personally twice to check and each time she said it was being processed but the last time she telephoned and spoke to the person at the 'head office' . It arrived a few days after that!

  8. Thanks NH. Interesting - when we suggested dropping dental and optical altogether and maybe some of the others, they wouldn't go with that. Said it was 'hospital only' or with all the other add-ons which I didn't think could be right. However, they have now dropped the fee by €14 per month for the same as we had before so for the moment OH is happy with that. However, I am going to look into it for when mine comes up for renewal so will investigate Swisslife, and a few others, etc.

I couldn't quite grasp exactly what hospital cover was. From what he said it seems to cover everything you would want in the way of X-rays, MRI's, etc. - not just being IN hospital. It was quite hard understanding what wasn't included, which we might need but I suppose that's where all the research comes in.

It's no good waiting until you get the renewal notice to try and look into it (!) so I am going to be a bit proactive before mine comes up.

Hope you have/are recovering well NH.

  9. Mrs T - I wonder if you have changed and who to? Hope you have managed to resolve something.

We have been happy with Axa but my OH has just received the renewal which has gone up 12%to €93 pm. He is nearly 75 but it still seems a lot - by the time he is 80, it will be €150!! We are going to go in and see them and don't want to be without a Mutuelle, even though he now has an ALD which will pay 100% for the malady itself.

I am looking for something which would cover him for other eventualities without a huge deficit. ( we accept we would have to pay some out) but a bit cheaper!

I believe he may not be able to find another one after the age of 75 so that is also a worry.

Would be interested to hear what others have done, in a similar situation.

    Thank

  10. Hi

If there are no children, Parsnips, then 100% can go to the spouse, can't it, in a normal Will, without any donations being necessary?

Just checking - in case something has changed. I also didn't know about the 10 year 'marriage regime' rule if married in the UK.

    Thanks

  11. Hi Parsnips

Re your reply to DD, is there any benefit, as a French resident, in having UK law (will) apply to the worldwide estate, if you still fall within the French inheritance laws for succession, etc. and thus still have to leave it to 'reserved heirs' or they pay the 60% tax?

I think I am missing something

    Thanks

  12. Hi Norman

I missed your latest list of useful hospital/medical vocab as my printer wasn't working. Now I can't find it even with the search function.

Could I ask you to post it again so that I could run it off, please.

I want to familiarise myself with the terms in case of need!

    Thanks in advance
