  1. Some time ago I changed my e-mail sender from Wanadoo to SMTP. Having recently had problems with SMTP I now wish to change back. Under Windows live mail - accounts- properties - servers I have changed outgoing e-mail back to Wanadoo however under -advanced- I need to change the server port number for outgoing mail back to the wanadoo port, anybody know what number goes in there? Thanks
  2. I have just read your post regarding Kindle books. It is possible to get hundreds of books free through your kindle itself however it must be registred in The UK to go to Amazons UK site. This is not a problem, I did it in 5 minutes. You first go into 'Menu' and then 'settings'. From here under registration 'deregister' your kindle from its current address. You can then re-register it, using your normal (French) bank card then , when it asks for an address use ANY UK address It is not important and does not need to correspond in any way with your cards. In seconds you will be registered as a UK user then you will go to The co.uk site when you shop with your kindle where free books abound, in fact once you are on the 'shop at Kindle store' page click on 'Best sellers' and right at the very  top right hand corner of the page you will see 'Kindle top 100 free', simply navigate to there and click and away you go. Hope this helps.
  3. Recently whilst helping neighbours they said they had lost their satellite signal. Now normally this can be attributed to dish having moved, lose connections etc etc. However in this case the dish was sheltered not obscured and well fitted. It appears that the UK channels disappeared last Tuesday (gradually they say). Now the strange thing is that normally to receive UK transmittions from the Astra 2 cluster the dish points at 'about ' the suns position at 11am (well here it does), however this dish was pointing at suns position at 'about' 2pm or maybe 3 pm. Does anyone know of satellites carrying UK transmittions that have been switched off recently or anything else which could account for this. All usual 'receiver' things have been checked.
  4. When recently trying to simply print a word document on Windows 7 I was faced with something called 'onenote'! Where this came from I have no idea however it would not allow me to print anything until I supplied more information than is needed on a passport application! I gave up and forwarded to my OH. Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this infernal software so that I can once again press quickprint and hey ho out will come my document.
  5. I have just been given a Kindle E-book reader from Amazon, fantastic but because you have to register using bank account details (i.e address) it will only work on the international site for purchasing E-books not the co.uk one (which seems much cheaper). I have a UK bank account but with my French address which is apparantly the problem. Now, before begging a UK based friend to let me register with his bank details and address is there any other, simpler way over this problem? Oh, and a Happy New Year to all.
  6. I have been using OE for many years with no problems. Recently I keep getting the message saying that to save disk space OE can compact messages. Well this would be OK but the message comes up every 2 minutes or so, even if OE is closed. Any ideas how I can stop these messages appearing.

  8. OK, if you want to watch BBC iplayer in France then you should go to www.witopia.net. I have used their vpn to access iplayer for several years both here in France and also in The Middle East with no problems. They have worldwide servers including The UK (London and Manchester although it doesn't matter which you use). The cost of the download is 59$ and you can be up and running in about 5 minutes. Installation and use is very simple and I recommend it.
  9. Anyone who wants a programme that actually works should usewitopia at www.witopia.net. The open programme costs 59$ but works great and the exe file is transferrable from computer to computer so long as its for the same os. Have used without problems for 6 months now.   Wils
  10. When trying to edit a web page of mine on a gite rental site there are two text boxes to enter text in. When using Internet Explorer the boxes appear empty (although there is text in them on the web site)and  no cursor appears so it is impossible to amend or add any further the text. I have looked at  tools > internet Options > security/privacy etc and they are all set to default as are advanced settings as well. Does anybody have any further suggestions? When I tried using Google Chrome all text was there, when I tried using Firefox nothing at all.

  14. I have a problem with Outlook express, it has been there for quite a while and therefore I am reluctant to do a restore. I would like to un-install the programme and then re-install again to try to solve the problem, my question, if I do this will I lose  my e-mails and address book?
  15. Signed up with them 4 years ago and got nothing so just left it, have just been back on to their site to find my advert is still there even though I have not paid anything (or received a single enquiry) for three years, judge them for yourself but I wouldn't bother.
  16. We are in The Languedoc, been renting for 6 years, this is by far the worst year yet, normally get 20 - 22 weeks but at present only 7 weeks booked.
  17. I have recently bought a new laptop, the problem is as I type (at no great speed) the actual text on the screen lags behind my far from nimble fingers by as much as 3 seconds. Now the laptop is no slouch having a core 2 duo T7250 processor from Intel, 2.00Ghz, and 2.0 GB RAM. I run XP Pro and have AVG anti virus and Spyware. Under task manager System idle Process takes about 98% and there are no 'odd' processes running. Does anyone have any idea as to what can be causing this, it happens in all  programmes (even this one, it's doing it now) such as Outlook Express and Word . Wils
  18. I have just replaced my laptop with another similar machine. Movie clips which played fine on the old machine will not play on the new one still using Windows media player, the sound comes through but instead of pictures I get the randomised pattern on the media player anyone any idea how I can remedy this?
  19. For some reason on my OH's new computer, running Outlook Express, under the 'tools', 'options' there is no spelling option. Further the spelling button on any new e-mails she is writing is not active, can anyone help?
  20. We have an old Languedoc farmouse (Mas) where recently the terracota tiles originally used for insulation (called parafoi)? have been removed, we now want to lay these on the kitchen floor. My question, can these be laid with tile colle or does it need anything more substancial. The floor is new concrete, sound and dry. After laying these tiles we plan to varnish them as protection, good idea?
  21. Does anyone know of a good reminder software download. I need something that will pop-up on the screen as a reminder for appointments etc (brain now to fuddled to remember). I run XP and Outlook express.
  22. Try Revel, a market town between Castlenaudry and Toulouse.
  23. When you get about 50 spams a day you sort of notice when suddenly they stop! Have I become so unpopular that even the spammers can't be bothered with me? Well a little research shows that suddenly my ISP, Orange has started to filter my mail and remove (very sucessfully) spam messages. I have not signed up for this service, that I know of, does anyone have any clues as to why this service is now being provided, hopefully for free?
