  1. RE your search engine question : Firstly you do not need to pay for a placement on Yahoo or Google if you can make a ranking on your own merits. If you look you will see the main results then the highlighted ones on the side. The main results are not paid for rankings , they are ' genuine ' Secondly as an aside , Yahoo give more relevant and true rankings than Google but so do most search engines , its a bit like the old VHS versus beta question. Why did VHS survive and beta ( which was technically far better) die   . MARKETING google have done the business and nicked yahoos glory ( for now) Back to your actual question , search engines try to keep the way they rank sites a secret but they use many things to rank sites including these. Keyword content ( in your case E.G maybe ' Dordogne Gite ' ), links to other 'relavent and ranked sites' , actual quality of content ( if hand indexed) . One thing though , unless you do your own or at least understand web design/coding , you are not going to be able to ' take on ' the search engine challenge. You will have to be a bit sneeky and just get your site shown / listed / linked from as many other sites as you can cheeply or for free. You can of course pay someone to improve your site but beware many many people, set themselves up as doing this and many many of them are useless and will rip you off. And yes the popular habit of sneeking your link on to forums does help to a small degree but only for word of mouth since forum content is stored in a database and not crawlled by search engines. Also it does tend to annoy the owners of the forums ( like me )  All of the info you require re search engine optimisation is available on , you guessed it the search engines but again most of it is people after your money for doing naff all.

  3. lo all, my partner and I are looking to move to France and have been for some time. I have retired very early and intend to live off my private investment income ( modest) and have no mortgage. I intend to register and pay my taxes in France to become a 'proper' French resident and raise a young child to be as i do not wish to bring up a child in the U.K. My partner however is on long term incapacity benefit and industrilal injuries benefit having crippled hands via hard work. We have no intention of going to France to be ' on social security or 'similar' but Tracey really is entitled to her benefit for having lost the ability to work, I am obviously intending to claim nothing here or there. My better half is worried at the possibility of losing her benefits if she becomes a French resident and i am sure someone here must have been in a similar situation , could anyone help here or by E-Mail. As an aside , our child will most likely be born here before we go , will it be a problem for the child to be registered in the french system as long as i am ? Thanks

  5. Not wishing to disagree for the sake of it but and only post this for an interesting aside to the thread. Microsoft are of course a large company who do spend much cash on R and D Mention has been made of the smaller companies 3rd party software e.t.c compatibility probs and this is perfectly true. HOWEVER Microsoft as is typical of them have released SP2 with many compatibility issues. The Speedtouch USB DSL Modem is the most common modem in use today for ADSL yet there are 'issues' for some ( not all) of its users with SP2 even if using the latest drivers .  Internet explorer fails to work with many cookie based forums yet just about any other browser does. I get more e-mails to my forum asking why peeps can't login and post ( Explorer users of course) than any other tech type e-mails and I'm not alone in that one. Isn't this typical of Microsoft ?  I do my best to avoid them but then that's not easy is it Just a thought. Just discovered this particular french forum by the way,  well helpfull peeps on it
