With the Livebox, you can have wireless internet access and some other options (television, for one, I think). If those don't interest you, you certainly don't need it.
If you go to the France Telecom website, you can find a lot of information about the different options, also a link to double-check that broadband is really available for your line.

Thanks, Buntina, I'll try those settings. Two more questions: why do you suggest replacing the Sagem F@st modem (which seems to work okay) and what modem do you recommend?

I have Wanadoo ADSL via the Sagem F@st 800 modem. Unfortunately, when I ran the modem's installation CD, it also installed Wanadoo software that I don't like (and that I suspect will give me headaches when I am connecting outside of France).
I understand that it is possible to uninstall the Wanadoo software and connect manually through the modem if you have all the correct connection settings. I have our login name and mot de passe, but don't have a dial-up number and can't find it anywhere on the Wanadoo website.
Have any of you done this? Do you know the settings I need? Don't know if it's pertinent, but I'm running WinXP SP2 on a laptop.
I'd be very grateful for assistance on this.

We usually receive our facture for the Taxe Foncieres in late September or early October, for the Taxe d'Habitation later in October.

Have any of you ever used house-planning software to draw floor plans or plan renovations to your houses in France? We're about to start some pretty extensive renovations to the kitchen, add bathrooms, etc., and I would like to find some software to use for my sketches.
Any advice, recommendations, warnings?

That's what I had. Thanks for trying, though.

I've been trying to read the Internet Setup FAQ thread; it looks very helpful, but the post was cut off before the end. Does anyone have a copy of the original, presumably complete, post?

Chico, we've had Ligne Résidence Sécondaire service since we bought our maison sécondaire 4 years ago. We've never had a primary residence in France. However, we did not make the arrangements via the website; my husband went to an FT office to set up the service.
You can suspend service up to 3 times a year, for a minimum of 2 months per suspension. Once your account is established, service can be turned on and suspended via the website.
Since we normally stay in our house twice a year (for about 2 months each time), we find it extremely economical and convenient.

I believe the taxe d'habitation is based upon the rental value (as a residence) of a dwelling. Type in "taxe d'habitation" in Google or another search engine and you should get links to a lot of info. (Google offers translations, albeit mechanical ones, also.)
Does anyone know the Wanadoo ADSL modem connection settings?
