  1. Interesting.  I've never had any spam on my Wanadoo/Orange account.  Of course, I don't use it a lot.  Hotmail does at least let you have everything that's not from a "contact" dumped into your Junkmail account, a feature that hasn't made its way to gmail (where I do get spam).

Of course, if you download your Orange mail through Outlook Express (and, presumably, also Outlook), you could set up rules to have all that stuff blocked from the ISP.

  2. For what it's worth, it took me 2 weeks to get Wanadoo access (that's 1 1/2 weeks after the Wanadoo tech support people told me that we were already connected).   One morning our connection magically appeared.  I think it just took FT that long to do the settings- I've heard they've had a lot of personnel cutbacks.
  3. My friend has done nothing, and isn't really apt to visit this forum.  I think in the past her husband has probably gone to the website and deleted the mail from her inbox.  If I were in France, I could help her without assistance, but I'm trying to help via very long distance (I'm in the US).

All I really need to know is whether, in general, it is necessary to go to her free messagerie to delete the old mail.  I know that some servers (gmail, for example) will save old mail on the website regardless of one's OE or Outlook settings.

  4. I have a friend who uses free.fr and gets a lot of e-mail.  Occasionally, e-mail will get bounced back to the sender with this message:

"Hi. This is the qmail-send program at free.fr.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

    <[email protected]>:
    User's Disk Quota Exceeded:
Sorry, your message cannot be delivered as the recipient has exceeded
their disk space limit for email."

I know that I can set Outlook Express to delete my Wanadoo/Orange e-mail from the server after I've downloaded it.  Can this be done with free.fr also?

  5. This is normal procedure.  The buyers can't insure the property until they own it; you must insure the property for as long as you own it.  You have notified your insurance company about the upcoming closing, haven't you?  After the closing, you (or someone acting in your behalf) just trots round to the insurance company rep's office with the "attestation".  (Perhaps someone in the notaire's office can even do this by fax or telephone, I'm not sure.)

We have bought two houses in France and have never been present for the closing (having authorized someone in the notaire's office to act for us).  We've never had any problems about this.

  6. I think BJSLIV is correct about the FT service (although it wouldn't hurt to ask or at least to search the website- there may be some provision for a really long absence such as yours).

You can suspend telephone service for a maison secondaire up to 3 times each year for a period of at least 2 months.

You can suspend some internet services, but not ADSL.  The (then) Wanadoo agent who signed me up was horrified that I subscribed ADSL when we only use our phone about half the year, but, for our purposes, ADSL was the only way to go (and it is considerably cheaper than our US DSL service that we use for the rest of the year).

  7. I'm glad you like the Anapod software and would be interested to hear if it continues to work well for you.  Or not.

I have my first iPod on order and expect to receive it in a few days.  At the moment, I'm a bit torn between trying the iTunes stuff first or getting the Anapod software (I'm really a neophyte and a bit technophobic to boot, so the decision is difficult for me).

  8. Hi, Clair,

I would get at least 1 GB of ram.  I have 2GB on my laptop and can happily run my Photoshop software simultaneously with house design software and MS Word/Excel while listening to the BBC3 on streaming radio via Win Media Player (which you might want to do if you get broadband access).

If I attempted to do that on our PC (which, admittedly has only 256 MB), something would crash.

Also, it's a good idea to have at least 4 USB 2 ports.  I frequently have a USB mouse (hate the built-in touchpad mice on laptops), printer, modem and other device (card reader or number pad- handy for French characters as I have a US laptop) plugged in at the same time.

  9. Is your computer on a home network?  If you select Start/Run/cmd/okay, you will open the C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe screen and see something like: "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name>" (it won't have the quotation marks).

Type "ipconfig/all" without the quotes and press enter and you will see the ip addresses, among other things, of your computer and your router (default gateway).  192.168.1.1 is normally the address of your router.  The addresses of your computers may vary at times unless you have set static ip addresses for them in your router settings, but they will be 192.168.1.something.

The bottom line is that your firewall may be blocking access to something on your home network unless you have configured the firewall settings to permit this access.

  10. I've never had anyone refuse to bring a carafe d'eau; in the lovely little restaurant in our ville it is presented to all, unasked.

We always order wine, but I'm a big water drinker.  In smaller, family-run restaurants we usually order a bottle of l'eau plat also, just to help the profit margin.

  11. I'm not a fan of Symantec either and have a huge file of e-mail correspondence with their support techs regarding problems I've had with them in the past (but I confess that I haven't yet gotten rid of their software, which came preinstalled on my computers).

I'm enclosing a link to Spyware Warrior, a site that has a lot of information about viruses and other security issues (don't be put off by the name- it's not only about spyware).  It also has info and links that might be helpful to you about HijackThis logs.

  12. David,

This may not work for you (I am no techie), but, when you scanned the photos, where did you save them?  Are they in your My Pictures file?

In my version of WinXP, if I open the My Pictures file (Start, My Pictures), highlight a photo by hovering the cursor over it, and select Email this file from the list on the left-hand side of the page (under File and Folders Tasks), a Send Pictures via Email box appears that offers the option Make all my pictures smaller.  If you select this and also select Show more options (bottom left of box), it will give you some choices about the size of the photos you send.

Good luck, and congratulations to your son.  May he and his intended have a long and happy life together.

  13. My user name and password were on a sheet I got from FT when I signed up (but I did it in person at an FT store).  They may be the same as you had for your dial-up account.

A friend of mine who switched from FT dial-up to ADSL had fogotten her user name and password but was able to get them by calling FT Wanadoo customer service.  The number I have for that is 3900.  Select option 1, and then select option 2 on the annoying automated menu to reach a service tech.  I warn you that most of these techs speak only French.  You may have a number for English-language customer service.

  14. David,

The settings you mentioned are for connecting your computer to the internet.  They aren't the settings for sending and receiving your e-mail.

Is your Wanadoo e-mail your only e-mail account?  Here's how I set up OE to access my Wanadoo e-mail:

Open Outlook Express.  Go to Tools, Accounts, Mail.  Select Add, Mail.   On the Your Name screen, type in your name as you want it to appear on your e-mail.  Select Next.  On the Internet E-mail Address screen, type in your Wanadoo e-mail address.  Select Next.

On the E-mail Server Names screen, select My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.  For your incoming mail server, type pop.wanadoo.fr.  For your outgoing mail server, type smtp.wanadoo.fr.  Select Next.

On the Internet Logon screen, type the e-mail account name (Identifiant de messagerie) given you by Wanadoo.  Then type your Wanadoo e-mail password (Mot de passe de messagerie).  Check Remember password.  Select Next.

On the Congratulations screen, select Finish.

(If any of these steps is missing, don't panic unless you never get to a screen that offers Finish as an option.  If that happens, PM me.)

Try out your account.  If it doesn't work, don't despair.  Go again to Tools, Accounts, Mail.  Highlight the Wanadoo account and select Properties

On the General screen, your should see your account listed as pop.wanadoo.fr (you can change this later if you like, but leave it for now).  You should also see your name and your complete internet address.  Make sure that the box Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is checked.

On the Servers screen, under Server Information you should see the information you typed in about your POP3 and smtp servers.  Under Incoming Mail Server, you should see your account name and a row of dots for your password.   Make sure that the Remember Password box is checked.  Under Outgoing Server, check the My Server Requires Authentication box.  Then choose Settings.

On the Outgoing Mail Server screen, choose Log on using.  Type in your account name and password.  Check the Remember Password box.  Do not check the Log on using Secure Password Authentication box.  Select Okay.

Skip the Connection and Security screens.  On the Advanced screen, you should see a number (probably 25) in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box.  You should also see a number (probably 110) in the Incoming Mail (POP3) box.  The two This server requires a secure connection (SSL) boxes should be unchecked.  Do not check any other boxes on that screen.  Select Okay.

Close the Tools menu and try again to send/receive your e-mail.  Good luck.
