  1. Thanks Teamedup.  Lesson learnt there then. I like to think I'm a good law abiding french resident - just something new everyday to learn from eh!  I used to worry my self silly about 'doing things right here' and now tend to just 'go with the flow'.  Life's to short to worry
  2. Hi Gas, We also recently received our French Tax Rtn Form.  I hold my hand up that I did not go seeking it from our Marie or Ctr des Impots.  I kinda knew they'd catch up with me eventually.  No big deal hopefully, I'm just getting my own back and 'doing things in my time'... I know I shouldn't be like  that but after 15 months of waiting for others to get their act together I'm getting into the swing of it.  Anyway, I also wasn't quite sure how to fill the form in so, I rang our local Ctr des impots, managed to ask in French if there is anyone there who speaks English that I could speak to.  A lovely man came on the line and suggested that I bring the form into his office and he would help me fill it in.  Very nice man he was too.  Another piece of red tape sorted.
  3. Sorry to jump on this thread but we are confused. We are about to go out today to purchase a Franco Belge stove, the model is 'Le Normandie'.  We are hoping to fit this ourselves into our existing fireplace.  Last winter we had open fire's but most of the heat went up the chimney.  Anyway, our main confusion is whether or not we need a 'liner'?  What is a liner?  We assumed that as we have been having open fire's the bricks are refractory bricks and someone mentioned that if you have refractory bricks you don't need a liner???  Is the liner the stainless steel tube that fits onto the stove going up the chimney?  Oh and now I'm even more confused...  VJ, you talk about a 'double insulated stainless steel chimney'.  What do you mean?  Is this where you have refractory bricks and the stainless steel tube? Sorry to sound a bit dumb but any advise greatly welcome.
  4. I've gotta say I don't know what I'd have done without some of the info I've gleaned from this site and others for that matter. I've nearly always found the answers I'd been looking for, not always by direct postings but from, dare I say it, 'lurking'.  Only wish I'd known about it before we moved here 15 months ago.  I even smile to myself at some of the banter that goes on now and then - I guess we're all 'only human' eh! Well done to all of you little gems santé! Jules - Montagrier 24
  5. Just outside a small village called Montagrier which is in between Riberac and Perigueux - Dept 24.  Our house and our lovely farmer neighbour is among a handful of tiny communes around the ville of Montagrier.  Stunning views from our hill top vantage point, just trying to convince moh to lob the leylandi for even better views. Moved here 15 months ago from Staffordshire UK with moh Jeff, 2 cats and my parents.  Parents now gone home tho... don't ask!!! Doing a barn conversion into gites which we hope will sustain us.
  6. Hello everyone again, Looks like this book is the one everyone is talking about for pool newbies. I was about to get it from Amazon today at £14.83 but by the time post and tax was added it was going to cost me over £21.  Just wondered if anyone knew if this book might be for sale in France, preferably somewhere near Perigueux or, an even longer shot, would some kind person out there maybe have a copy that they no longer use and wish to sell it to me? I did find the book also for sale on Amazon.fr but thought that maybe it would be in French???  Anyone know the answer to that one??? Thanks folks. Jules (24) Montagrier
  7. Hello everyone, I need to go shopping for chlorine etc for the pool but having read a few threads, pool websites and fact sheets I just need a few pints sorting.  I think I've got the gist of what to do and what to use but all the names for the chemicals are in English.  I presume they'd be easy to find in the 'specialist' shops or brico's but perhaps someone could put me on the right path. Okey dokey... looks like I need a - Chlorine: Granules, tablets and something called shock b - Dry acid or alkali ??? c - AAglicide(optional) d - flocculant (Optional) You're probably wondering why our pool installer hasn't explained all this to us seeing as it's a brand new build.  Well, I'd love to tell you all but it's a really long story with some pretty horrible memories of dealing with a complete and utter t****r who calls himself a builder.  Look forward to your replies. Jules (24) Montagrier
  8. Hello there, We're also looking at pool security and whilst looking through these threads found this one interesting.  I thought the prices quoted above seemed pretty good so went onto Everblue's site to see for myself.  I just had to cut and paste today's prices to show how much they've gone up since last year... 9. Feel a lot happier now that I've read your reply - thanks Hoddy!
  10. Hi everyone, I'm sorry that I only seem to come here when I have questions to ask.  Hopefully in time I'll be as helpful as a lot of you guys.  We're looking for a dentist near to us.  My husband lost a filling last night and our usual dentist (here in Tocane) cannot see us until the 12th June.  I explained it was quite urgent but she couldn't improve on that date.  Anyway, any recommendations greatly appreciated. Jules
  11. Hello everyone, For the last couple of days we've been hearing funny scratching noises coming from the wood under the roof of our barn.  It's been driving me potty trying to figure out what is is.  This morning there is was again... this time though I noticed whilst looking up tiny flecks of saw dust floating down from a hole about 8-10mm in diameter.  Then I saw it, something black and big.  Got the husband to come investigate.  He's managed to stab it with a craft knife and get it out of the hole.  It's about an Inch long, black with dark blue wings and 6 short hairy legs.  Anyone have any idea's????   Jules - Montagrier (24)
  12. Thanks Leslauriers, We popped down to SARL Nadal yesterday and arranged for a gentleman to come out to give us a quote.  We didn't even realise they did Fosse's there - just goes to show it's not what you know but who you know! Jules
  13. Does anyone know of building companies near Perigueux that install fosse sceptics? We have a project and drawings where 2 x 5000 cubic metre tanks are required along with a pump to 2 sand filter beds.  The soil on our property is made up of rock & clay and does not drain very well, hence the pump because the filter beds are up-hill from the fosse. Anyway, any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks Jules - Montagrier 24
  14. Hello everyone, I'm brand new to this forum although have spent last few days familiarising myself with most of the topics etc.  This particular thread I read with great interest and wonder if you guys could offer some advice.   We employed an architect last year to draw up plans for our barn/gite conversion which is over the 170 sq mtr.  Their quote was 3588€ although to date no money has yet exchanged hands due to a problem with a new fosse installation.  The architect had drawn up plans which we we're not happy with but because of the fosse problem everything was put on hold - this was back in July last year.  In the meantime we obtained another quote which was even higher and so thought perhaps our original quote was about right.  (I know I should have gotten at least 3 quotes but like a lot of you guys we just couldn't get any response when we approached different architects).   Anyway, we have now resolved the fosse problem and intended to get back in touch with the architect.  But, having read your messages here I am again now thinking 'whoa'!!!   Perhaps someone can recommend an architect who will do a realistic quote?
