  1. Can anyone advise whether an English mains gas cooker can be converted to bottled gas? Is it just a question of converting the gas jets and if so, what sort of shop do we buy them from (France) and do they need to be fitted by a professional? Thanks for your help. Magie (79)
  2. If you go to http://www.impots.gouv.fr/e_services/calcul_ir/simplifie_bandeau.htm you can enter your income and work out your tax liability as Teamed Up has suggested. Pretty sure, having done the above calculation for ourselves in a similar situation, you would have no personal tax liability in France if you have none in England. Good luck. Magie (79)
  3. The Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society card has no additional charges when used abroad for goods and services and also offers a good exchange rate e.g. on 3 Oct it was 1.5904. Another useful feature is the photo ID on the reverse. Contact no is 01202 758008. Magie (79)
  4. For about a month all postings on all forums have been appearing in alphabetical order on my computer. Consequently the latest posts could be on any page and it would take the patience of a saint to trawl through to keep up to date. Needless to say, I don't have that patience, or the time. It's worse still when none of the new messages are flagged, which also happens. I've contacted Forum Admin twice over the last fortnight but to no avail. Any solutions, anyone? I delayed contacting Forum Admin for a good while as I assumed it was a blip on the Forum website or me pressing the wrong button. Now it's driving me mad. Help, please! Magie
  5. Well, a lot of info to take in! Thank you all very much. Where did I see half-an-acre dealt with in 2 hrs? This is the stuff dreams are made of - had anticipated at least a week for our 700sq m! However, protective clothing, numb hands and ringing ears did scare me more than a little - I do hate those savage electrical machines like hedge-trimmers - make me wonder if back-ache and a whole week with secateurs/scythe is preferable. However, husband gets on well with them, says he has protective gear - pas de probleme. So I'll just stick with my secateurs over a little area and take photos of him shaking and numbed doing the big work very fast. Brushcutters (debrousilleuses or something similar) are available for hire from Bricomarche so that's the answer. Thank you! As for what happens after plot is cleared, please add your support to my request for LF Gardening Forum. On Living France forum, below Postbag. Merci beacoup! Magie
  6. Please can anyone help with a translation for the following item we hope to hire in France next week. Regret I don't know the English word either (good start!) but here goes. It acts like a scythe or powerful strimmer. It doesn't connect to the mains electricity but has a motor on its top instead, and you pull a cord to get it going. The task in hand will be clearing a very overgrown garden. Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance. Magie
